Why Not Savage?

SavageMark, this is a trap. You are being lured into a snare that will consume all your spare time and money. The worst thing that can happen to you is that you might prove to be really good. 10 years from now when you have 30 expensive rifles that shoot basically just like this, you were warmed.

I used to be SavageDavid.

Anyone who wants proof that the Savage LRPVs shoot need look no further than our website. Our group, the MWVMS (Midwest Varmint Match Shooters), shoots two classes - Factory and custom, and has been doing so since it's inception in 2007 as the Varmint Hunter's Association Midwest Regional match (until 2016 when VHA died and we became MWVMS). Year in and year out, you will see 9 out of 10 factory guns on the line to be Savage LRPVs (mostly 6BRs). Why? They just plain shoot. Many shooters simply replace the factory barrel with a custom and compete successfully in the custom class.

A review of match scores on the website (https://sites.google.com/site/mwvarmint/home - go to historical matches in the left column) shows that almost 15% of the matches have the factory Savages out-shooting or tying the customs. Compare the winning scores at the top of the score sheet for each class. And these are FACTORY barrels. In the rest of the matches, the typical score comparison shows that customs win by only 1 - 5 points (out of 200) over the Savages most of the time.

Matches where the Savages scored higher than the customs (or tied) are;

2011 Midwest Regional 196 vs 195 (factory vs custom)
2011 Cannonball 191 vs 191
2012 ToadWalker 186 vs 184
2013 Cool Match 195 vs 192
2014 Hot Match 185 vs 185
2016 ToadWalker 172 vs 169
2017 Cincy 500 183 vs 171 (my match win and also the largest margin ever in our circuit for factory over custom)
2017 Meeker2 188 vs 186

In 2015 I ran my Savage 6BR in the CUSTOM class at the CSA balloon shoot in Wisconsin and won with it. It was hammering during qualifications and my custom gun was not doing as well, so I shot the Savage. It was an awesome thing to see those guys' reactions when my Savage won. In 2017 the same gun shot just as well as my custom and I won both classes at the CSA balloon shoot. Here are my final 600 yard tiebreaker targets (factory on the left) with factory shooting a slightly smaller group than the BAT MB action with a Krieger barrel on it.

Just a month before that, I won the 2017 Cincy Sizzler 500 listed above. Here is a typical 500 yard target from that Savage shot at that match.

It was a pleasure to shoot and win so many matches with that 6BR LRPV. It finally gave up the ghost at the 2019 Midwest Regional and I am currently tuning up a new, factory stock barrel that Savage put on it for me. So far it looks promising. I can only hope it shoots as good as the last one did.

Just me of course but I think you should go wherever Mark wants to meet at whatever range he wants to shoot.
Perhaps you’ll become good friends at the end of the day and Mark can get some good exposure to long range shooting

As for a Sanctioned match I’ve been talking with a guy that shoots at Williamsport . He says the people there are pretty snobby . Snobby really turns me off so I’m not sure I’m going to go .
