savage f class rebarrel

What does it take to put a 1.250 barrel on a savage model 12 f class rifle. will this fit my action. If I get a blank what will it take to put it on my rifle. Also would a 1 in 7.5 work good out to 1000.

You can buy a prefit large shank barrel. and screw it on your self. Or buy a blank and have a smith do it, with or without the nut. Your existing stock inlet for the new 1.25 barrel might need some work. What caliber and bullet are you going to shoot at 1000y, that must be known to suggest a twist rate.

Sorry it will be a 6br. I am mainly concerned about mating it to the action. reason I am asking is there is one for sale in the classifides and it looks good. How long is the wait time from the manufacturers to get a new prefit one?

Two to four months, Shillen only makes them at 1.060 for Savage Drop in, How much for the barrel? reason I ask Lester Bruno stocks a ton of barrel blanks at very cheap prices, and he can do it all for you he did a 30BR for me on a savage target action the barrel was $319 is the one your looking at less?

Mcgowen has prefits at decent prices, they shoot excellent. I have one in large shank, m12, 1" @ the muzzel, 6mmbr that I use for mid range fclass. I would use a 1:8 twist for 6mmbr and shoot no heavier than the 108 grain bullets in a 6br case. I don't think that the heavier 6mm pills, in 1:7.5, with the standard 6br would be pushed fast enough to gain an advantage.

I'm going thru this now for my lrpv. It now has a 26" factory large shank bull barrel ( same shank size as yours ) in a 1-12 tw. I want a 1-9 tw to shoot higher bc bullets. i called pac-nor , sin arms ( brux ).. both were $420 and a 12-16 wk Wait. ended up w/ a krieger criterion which Jim at northland ( on savage shooters site )had in stock.Less $$$ and immediate ship. To change the barell you need an action wrench, a barrel nut wrench and a set of go..no go gages in the caliber that you had the barrel chambered for. people will tell you that you don't need the no go gage..use tape on the go gage..but for $20 I'd rather be safe , the tools run around $100 & pay for themselves the 1st use as to using a gunsmith. no at all hard to do ..plenty of instruction & video on savage shooters.the ease of changing barrels & calibers is one of the benefits of savage ownership.

I did the same thing 6 months ago. I went with a Brux 1 in 8 twist 1.250 finished at 28" and did away with the nut. It worked out perfect and shoots like a house a fire low 1's at 100 yards I haven't tried it at 600 yards yet. I couldn't be happier.

I ended up getting a bartlin 1.25 7.5 twist from a forum member. I think it will work out very good. Thanks for the help.

I got a prefit Shilen Select Match from SSS and installed it in my garage in about twenty minutes. Shoots pretty well too.

I have had very good luck with the Criterion from Northland Shooters for my Savages. Jim keeps a good inventory in stock ready to ship and is a super guy to deal with.

McGowen quoted 6-8 weeks for custom pre fit Savage barrel. Mine is a 12 Target action, which takes a Large shank. The target actions also have shorter threads than the regular large shank barrels, and have a shorter barrel nut.

Shilen quoted 2-4 months lead time, which swayed me away from that direction. Need it by the spring.
