Who's got a new truck ?

Here is what was my dream truck, built it myself. '72 F250 started life as a 360, 4spd 2WD I purchased in Great Falls, MT fall of '78. Drove it to Midwest City, OK in Dec after my join spouse assignment request was approved. Sitting next to the off base TACAN near Tinker AFB.

It was our primary means of transportation until we received orders to Yokota AB, Japan in Nov '79 so drove it to Tacoma, WA and left my truck with my parents until we returned spring of 1983. My next assignment was to McGuire AFB, NJ. A fresh rebuild, clutch, brakes, etc. My wife was 7mos pregnant so my sister accompanied me on the cross country trip.

Year afterward I bought a rusted out F250 4WD, 390, 4spd, at the garden shop we used, ran and drove great, brought it home for $1500. Big bonus was the Dana 44-9F front axle with dual piston calipers! Stripped to the frame, repaired rusted cab mounts, then stripped body off mine and set on the frame. Finished that just months before having to report to Las Vegas for my 4yr stint in Tonopah.

Don't have many good pics anymore, here are my Fords in Vegas, truck was still 360/4spd.

Late '89 after an engine swap, 429/C6, which it still has today.

I'm a Ford truck guy but even if I wasn't, I'd still look hard at the Ford trucks. The new aluminum/alloy bodies are the only way to go. Ford trucks are probably the least of the 3 companies to have body rust issues with their trucks. Dodge and Chevy always had specific places that they rusted out as did Ford but Ford wasn't as bad. Now, Ford has zero chance of that happening. I have a 2014 Ford F250 that's ugly with some rust cancer. Started after only 7 years. When you pay 50k plus for a truck, you expect it to look the same after 7 years if well taken care of. Steel bodies will rust eventually. My new truck body will look the same till I sell it. I've seen 2015 used Ford trucks on the lot that look as good as they did new. I'm surprised Dodge or Chevy hasn't taken a page from Fords truck play book.

Fluid Film is your friend.

Have f150 Lariat on order. 5.0 L 4wd 3:73 rear end. Drove a new Tundra, just didn’t care for it. Have had several Toyota cars suvs very trouble free. I have a Ford Transit van with a 3.5 V6 10 speed. Most comfortable to travel in of anything I’ve owned. Hopefully the F150 will be a good choice.

Hey, does that stuff STOP rust ? Stop it from spreading ?

I honestly can't answer that question, but I know that if you live in an area that uses tons of road salt,(like sw PA) it is well worth the yearly application. I get an annual application every Sept/Oct on my 19' 4R, and the undercarriage has ZERO rust.

You just showed the greatest attribute of the older trucks! You can work on them yourself! Lots of room around the engine to access everything with simple tools. Crap! Where did I put my timing light?

It's a little late for that now. My 2014 has rust already. I'd like to retard that from continuing. Anything I can use that'll stop it from getting worse even if it's just slows it down would help. Obviously it'll need all new metal to stop it completely. I'll eventually get the rust removed but for now, I just want to slow it down.

You should be able to seek damages from your state! It taxes you on the fuel you buy to maintain your roads and then it puts corrosive de-icing product down that rots your vehicle. And

I like the 89! classic there. I can see the gun rack too! 429!!

I buy a new Ram every 3 years. Usually trade them in with 35 to 40,000 miles on them. I always keep them super clean and get great trade ins on them. It costs me right around 20,000 difference so it basically costs me 7000 a year to drive a brand new truck. I like the heated leather seats and steering wheel along with the in bed back up camera, it makes hooking up a gooseneck a breeze!
My trucks always have some kind of big trailer behind them and you cannot beat the newer diesels for pulling. Period!

I’ve never thought about tracking monthly cost over the long term, but I like it. My current truck is an 2014 F150 FX4 that I paid $42k cash for back in 2015. Adding in an estimated $5k for maintenance brings me to $435 per month for the period that I have operated the truck, which I think is pretty good.

You guys might have new fancy trucks with alum bodies and tailgates that blend margaritas...but I bet you all dont have a 6ft 4in bed in your cab, with all night diesel heat or a/c and surround sound! lol. This is what I convert to when doing solo trips. Only takes 10 min to pull passenger seat and install the floor. Only took me a week to build this tho!

GM SUCKS

My first new GM was a 1985 1/2 ton. The paint blew off the side going down the road, brake booster leaked, fuel injector pump junk @50K miles, heater core leaked, radiator leaked, tranny went at 70K, and the rear end @90K

I started buying FORD after that for company vehicles through fleet discount. Half ton pickups mostly, Excursions, and Expeditions after they quit the Excursion in 2005. By the time I sold out I had easily bought 25-30 new FORDS. Why, you say....BECAUSE OF ALL THOSE VEHICLES WE NEVER , NEVER, HAD ONE BACK TO THE DEALER FOR A WARRANTY ISSUE. They all ran well over 100K without any issues. They were WORK trucks and were used that way. The Excursions had a great seat in them, the seat in the Expeditions sucked, caused me major back issues. The last new one I bought I took directly to an upholstery shop; the guy took it apart and we trimmed the foam to fit me with a filet knife. I started buying GM again in 2016 just because of the comfortable seat in the Denali's, plus the ride. I've had trouble with every GM since, both mechanical and electrical. The fancy magnetic struts went south on one, 6 weeks wait and a bill of course. Then electrical problems on others, some that were unfixable. I traded my last one off at 43K because of electrical problems...WTF???? My Wife's 2021 with less than 50K just got out of the shop after the oil cooler INSIDE THE RADIATOR STARTED LEAKING OIL INTO THE COLLING SYSTEM. Power train warranty??? HA HA DOESNT COVER THAT $1,500 BUCKS..........It does cover major engine problems until 60K, so after the oil cooler ran the car low on oil, this POS will be gone before that 60k warranty is up. Why don't I just buy a Ford...the comfort, that is the only reason.

AT GM, "PROGRESS IS THEIR MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEM." THERE IS NO REASON TO HAVE ALL THIS ELECTRICAL CRAP ON THESE VEHICLES, MOST PEOPLE DON'T CARE ABOUT 4 CONFIGURATIONS FOR THE DASH INSTRUMENTS FOR EXAMPLE.

When I'm not busy sometime, I'll tell you what I really think.... :p

I got a feeling that wouldn't go well for me. No worries anymore.

Fluidfilm. Pull all body plugs and spray, then all holes in any channel thats on the underbody. All nooks and crannies plus cab corners if possible. Pull inner fenders/splash guards and spray back side of bedsides and the front fenders. Spray door bottoms and get up in drain holes. Repeat as desired.
