I agree about what you said.I suspect his point wasn't so much that it was cheap, as it was that it was affordable to more people then compared to now - that more people had the disposable income to do that kind of thing (that's not even mentioning the corporate driven technological advances that have driven costs up.) I mean at least he knew someone who could; I don't know of anyone today who does.
If you look at cost of living vs wages between then and now, you'll see that COL has gone up by close to or over 100% overall, while wages have increases 10 - 25%. A lot more people are living paycheck to paycheck now compared to then (assuming they're making a living - I personally don't see how those making near minimum wage can even survive, especially in urban areas.)
Or maybe I'm just blowing smoke. I don't know.
