hodgdon powder price increase?

Trying to migrate all of my hunting rifles to Reloder powder, at least 30% cheaper. Just bought five pounds of RL17 for 105.59 versus 3195 I paid for H4350 I picked up for a friend. Having said that, if you think prices are high now, wait until that "border tax" kicks in.

It does when it no longer sells. Matt
You know there was a time when I would believe that. Today, no. So many companies closing there doors due to online sales kicking there azzes. Rather than the companies reducing prices, they'd rather call it quits. Don't get it. CEOs so used to living at a level that dropping prices isn't an option. I guess going out of business is more profitable.

There is a difference between being sold online and closing the doors. Back in 2008 I bought Norma 300 WSM brass for 56.00 a hundred. In 2013 it sold for 200.00 a hundred. Price of materials or labor didn't drive it up. Sales drove it up. Other cartridges didn't go up 400 percent. Some only doubled. Some only went up a little. The demand drove it up. The companies that make most the powders and brass are almost all foreign. Matt

Prices aren't going to go down. Like you said demand runs them up. Demand will not drop on powder. Unless another company starts selling powders for less, we'll just be reaching deeper into our pockets. I bought an RTIC cooler for half of a yeti. Every bit the cooler at half the price. Yeti lost 50% of there sales when RTIC started selling coolers. My point is, powder companies wont close up shop because there's no replacement for it. Like gasoline, it's an item that we will all just dig deeper to afford.

But the problem is people were buying way more then needed because they were afraid they couldn't get what they wanted. I know guys that are sitting on hundreds of pounds of powder. They have 20 thousand or more primers. Then you have the ones that were buying to make a profit. This will slow down when they become available. Powder around here is not scarce. Every shop has it sitting on the shelves. That means buying has slowed down. H4350 AND Varget are the hardest to find and they are showing up regularly. Primers that you couldn't find for years are here also. The Federal match and BR4 are even here now. I believe the panic buying will stop. The only one that is scarce is 22 Ammo. But when the government stops buying the millions of dollars worth it will become available. Sooner or later the warehouses they have sitting full will have to be sold. Some of the surplus has been hitting the market already. Matt

Ammo prices are starting their free fall already.
Big ammo companies shot themselves in the foot.
Pretty much every one and their uncle now use mom and pop company made polymer coated pistol bullets for plinking and competition.
A lot of people have gotten into reloading and only buy self defense pistol ammo.

My friend worked as a vendor at SHOT show, I am avoid turning this into a political discussion.
So all that I am going to say is wait a year or so.

All you can do is keep your fingers crossed. Crazy the price of .22 rimfire ammo. I still have 500 Rd bricks of .22 ammo with stickers marked 7.99. Hard to find it for under 30.00 today. Just 8 years ago before our last president it was 8.00. Just hard to swallow.

Midsouth is advertising Hornady .17HMR Vmax ammo for 9.95 a box. That's down a couple bucks from the last few years.

In addition to all that Matt has said (which I believe is correct), I believe there is an inescapable reality that one, the scare is over over since The Leftist left the White House; and two, that there are less numbers of younger generation folks coming into reloading. The newer generation simply goes to the store and buys whatever ammunition they want to shoot and that's it. And those that have been stock piling reloading components have mostly run out of room and there's more to be had on the store shelves. And to add to the equation, reloading components companies got used to selling out of product and the big buck incomes are slowing, not to mention the middle class is diminishing in wealth and many spend their money on other toys, rather than guns and reloading goodies. Reports I've read show a dramatic decrease in the number of weapons being registered in states that require firearm registration. Even companies that sell firearms have reporting a gradual slowdown, which is part of why so many are offering a rebate for various weapons. Coupled with all that is the fact that the cost of living steadily increases and when the FED increases the Interest Rate, less money become available for toys. Add all that together, I suspect the trend in reloading will slow down even more and there will now be plenty to go around for those who still reloading and the fewer numbers coming into the sport. Just a few notions to chew on guys. For us Diehards, nothing will change except learning WTF all these newer powder names mean in terms of loads and accuracy.

Happy reloading folks!
Alex

Ya so many guys talking about prices dropping cause Trump is in office. That don't pay the bills. Nothing drops in price.

Just ordered 1000 Oregon Trail Laser Cast 200 grain SWC .452 and paid $114.00, paid $127.50 for the same amount in July of 2013.

Paid $1.99 for a gallon of gas on Sunday, 10 years ago it was over $3.00.

My Apple stock did go up about $3 today to $143.80, fortunately I paid a lot less for it 18 years ago.

Markets are a very interesting to see work, watch them long enough and you will learn that things "drop in price" all the time.

My property taxes dropped too and so did my SEV. I'm not happy with that. They go hand in hand. Typically when we want things to go our way, they don't. Occasionally we get lucky but it's the exception not the rule. It's never the norm nor has it ever been that any munitions or components decrease in price. Not even if a Republican is elected. Definitely are we happy with the sudden availability of otherwise absent items from the market while a Democrat sits in the whitehouse but it's never the norm that a Republican elect causes a decrease in price for these things we all purchase regularly. Sales, discounts and closeouts all happen. By the way, my stocks are up 30% since this time last year. Yes, I'm very happy.

But you never had a president that sold more guns, ammo and reloading items. It was record pace for the last 8 years. This was all historical highs. Matt

Your right about that !!! But I would just as soon forgo another 8 year presidency like we had with the last president. Probably will be shooting myself in the foot by saying that since it's early in this presidency but it's on the record anyway.

Many/most businesses target a numbers like 4 to 8 times inventory turn. When a buying panic starts due to numerous reasons, the availability gets tighter as inventory shrinks. Now the consumer/shooter gets concerned and loads up. As shooters, many of us end up hording product. We are part of process of of exceeded the manufacturing capacity for the industry. So who is responsible for driving up the prices hikes? Kind of like the 70's gas shortage? When many had a 1/2 tank of gas and saw a short line at the pump, many/most topped of their tank. Gas prices skyrocketed and the lines got longer.....sound familiar?
Do you really need to buy 16 lbs of powder to save $10-20?
