Whoa - Hodgdon Powder Price Increase

I suspect his point wasn't so much that it was cheap, as it was that it was affordable to more people then compared to now - that more people had the disposable income to do that kind of thing (that's not even mentioning the corporate driven technological advances that have driven costs up.) I mean at least he knew someone who could; I don't know of anyone today who does.

If you look at cost of living vs wages between then and now, you'll see that COL has gone up by close to or over 100% overall, while wages have increases 10 - 25%. A lot more people are living paycheck to paycheck now compared to then (assuming they're making a living - I personally don't see how those making near minimum wage can even survive, especially in urban areas.)

Or maybe I'm just blowing smoke. I don't know.
I agree about what you said.

I don’t know what he meant but what he said was :

Shooting is still a lot cheaper than a lot of other hobbies like hi performance cars or drag cars. Al or Jackie will tell you that's true

The prosecution rests :D

I think it’s an interesting story no doubt.

But you’re just making my point sir.
How many people in 1976 could afford to do this? Sounds like not even you. You mentioned the small guy, driving across the country but methenol, nitro and $250 slicks. And you were apparently part of the paid team.

Don’t exactly sound like poor guy sport or middle class. Even in 1976. But maybe I’m poor white trash and don’t know it. Compared to race teams I guess I’m pretty low rent.

Anyway, who cares, powder and bullets are getting stupid. The end
I guess you didn't comprehend what I was saying. There were tons of guy's doing it in 76. It was very affordable back then that's why there were so many funny cars running all over the country during the 70's. No you are totally wrong about being part of a paid team. A real lot of guy's who were crew members back then didn't get paid. It's not like today where there are 10 crew members per car. A real lot of guy's were out there with only 2 to 3 people helping out. I paid everything out of pocket. I was 18 years old and couldn't afford my own car, truck and trailer. Wemett was just like hundreds of other small time racing operations back then. He'd work all week to earn money to go send George, Burt and me out to match race just about every weekend and sometimes in the middle of the week. He had 3 small business's to generate income for the Funny Car. Man it was strictly a low budget operation just like most guys running back then. We would try to qualify at maybe one or 2 NHRA events but most of the small time guy's could make more money match racing than competing at the National event level.

I wonder how any places here in the US are even making nitro now in any quantity...

Or tires?

Just got an email from my long-time gun shop informing me that Hodgdon's power prices are going up 35% along with an increase in shortages expected! That's $71 for 1 lbs. of powder with tax, if they have it! o_O

I am wondering how much longer I can afford to continue centerfire rifle shooting even with my rationing approach at the range of cold bore concentrated precision shooting (10 - 12 rounds) and shooting the economical 223 Rem bolt rifles.
They can charge anything they want, You can,t find it anywhere.Tommy Mc

I used to be dedicated to hodgdon powder, fed primers, and nosler bullets, last powder was imr and accurate, before this major jump. So the bee, duce, and 25-20 will be used more, and calibers that I use cast will be an influence, and where I live it's not long range.

Posts like this make me wonder if our biggest threat to the shooting sports are the democrats or the industry. Either way, I am glad I have shifted my target shooting to precision air rifle competition. 200 rounds of match slugs are in the $13-$16 range.

It’s BOTH !! I hope people wake up this fall or our country as we know it will be forever lost IF it hasn’t already happened. My Dad who was one of the greatest generation is turning in his grave I m certain.

Now everyone is entitled and has rights …. Vs the past where everyone had to go to War and earn their rights. What a difference and a sad, sad story.

That gets $pendy too, started with one, up to four PCPs now! :D
Tanks and compressor maybe, the gun itself, most are a bargain as far as I am concerned. Four PCP’s, ok. I have 8-10 Varmint rifles. When air becomes hard to get or expensive everyone is in trouble. I am already looking at another 30-45 caliber.

The Dems said years ago if they couldn’t get the guns they would make it so expensive to shoot no one could afford it.

I was a loyal Hodgdon/IMR brand guy for 40 years. But, all that is in my cabinet now is VV and Shooter's World. Even if I'm paying the same price for other brands, Hodgdon's attempt at monopoly in the US has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Or follow the globalist view, 2030 great reset. No private citizens will own firearms. No reloading components, ammo needed. And air rifles will be included.
