White Tail Hunting Load for 308 Winchester

During the last 3 weeks I have harvested 6 deer with the load mentioned in my fist post. They are running 2860 fps. I have had complete pass through on all so far. Sixty to 360 yds. Quarter size entrance and exit wounds. 5-6 inch wound channels. All have hit were I held. Could not have expected any better performance out of a 20" model 7 Remington. Dan Muller sent me a test barrel to put on another rifle. Will chamber it up this weekend. Will try it out next week. Expect to get 3000 fps with 150 TTXXX in a .308 Win.
Nat Lambeth;

Factory Remington Model 7 barrel gave me 3019 fps with 51.5 of W-748. but it was toast after 600 rounds. The replacement barrel is giving me 2860 fps shooting 45grains of H-4895. The next new barrel will FL at 26", it has some new special rifling that Dan Muller has come up with, combo of cut and button technologies. From all the other test they have been hummers.

Nat,

This past week I had a chance to put my loads to use. Now I've shot a lot of deer over the years in the neck that were drt. But, I've never seen one fall that fast when hit in the vitals...until last Wednesday.

I jumped up a big 12 pointer out of some cedars about mid day. He was running across a field at about 100 yards away when I hit him in the vitals with the 150 TSX bullet and 45g of H4895. He literally did a front flop and was drt! Entrance hole through the ribs was .308". Exit hole in the ribs on the other side was about 3/8". Insides were like jelly!

Needless to say, I'm impressed.

Thanks again!

The new barrel has been installed Muller Works 26", AMU contour, 1:10, rifling proprietary.

Best load tested Barnes 150 Tipped tripple shock, 50.grains W-748 (compressed load), Wolf LR Primers, Lapua brass, seated 2.790" OAL, Average velocity (chronographed) 3010 fps, .216" measured group size (100 yds). Group size at 600 yds 1 7/8 inches. (shot off bags not a rest).

Deer shot at 457 yds had complete pass through just behind should and mid line horizontal top of heart and both lungs. Entrance wound .308 and exit would about the size of a quarter. Wound channel during cleaning revealed 5 inch diameter internal wound channel completely taking out lungs, aorta and top of heart.

Blood was at place of impact, the deer ran 60 yards with very good (Ray Charles could have followed this deer) blood trail to follow.

Will try a 1:11.27, 1:12 twist barrels later.

I shot some 150 and 180 grain bullets in this barrel. The 180s were running 2600 fps and sub .4 moa.
