Flat base vs boat tail on game

If the OP is using factory Corelokts, tuning isn't something he's worried about.

My experience with the 30-06, has repeatedly led me to one bullet.
The 165gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.
From 20 yards to 320 yards, the deer was always found where it was shot.

Now after 30+ years of hunting the 30-06 is gone, but the Ballistic Tip is still my go to bullet for hunting.

I've seen 2 instances where the 150gr, 30 caliber Corelokts (essentially Hornady Interlocks)
failed to perform with 5 & 6 shots in the vitals.

First was doe a friend and I found that was already gut shot.
He had a doe tag, so decided to take it.
30 foot shot with his Savage 99 in 300 Savage.
Deer went down. He started walking up to it. Deer got up & he put another round in it.
Down, up, bang, down up, bang, down, reload, up.
I finally had enough, and dropped it for good with a 7mm, 140gr Ballistic Tip to the head.
Doe had 1 gut hit, 5 chest hits, and 1 head shot.

Following year, my neighbor invited me to hunt with him on his family's property.
Buck came in, he shot 30 yards with his pump action 30-06.
Buck stopped and stood there looking around after the shot.
He hit it again. Deer walked 20 yards to the side. Bang, hit again.
Reload.
Again, I had enough finally, and head shot it with my 7mm-08 AI.
Dear had 6 chest hits and 1 head shot.

The older non bonded boat tails would shed there jacktets easier than fb. The newer bonded, composite, and partition do not have that problem

Ditto on the first 30cal 165 ballistic tips. I switched to them in my 06 when they first came out. They shot under 3/4". However they were like a hand grenade on deer. Went to 165 Interlocks and never looked back. I no longer use the 06, but have stuck with Interlocks for the 243, 260, 7-08AI. Although I've used the Sierra 85HPBT in the 243 on several and, if I can ever draw a tag, want to try the Barnes 120 in the 260.

My friends with the Corelokts was within the last 5 years.

I've been shooting Ballistic Tips since 1980 and have yet to recover one.
