Best hunting bullet for the mighty 308

Thank you for all your replies! I have my rifle almost ready, just waiting for the stock and my load development will start.

30 cal and 7mm, I and my sons have had unquestionable good results in accuracy and kill out to 600yd with the Sierra SBT game king and the Nosler partition and Balistic tips.

when after mule deer we stay with SBT and BT, when Elk, partition
longest kill 625yd mulie SBT and 550yd bear Partition, elk at 480 with PArtition

I used to use only Nosler 165g BT's...until I moved to Nebraska. The shots here are long and the deer are thick. A couple of years ago I switched to the Barnes 150g TSX and TTSX (running them at 2880fps out of four different rifles) after reading what Nat Lambeth said about them and never looked back.

Every deer we have shot since has fallen in its tracks. This year my dad took a very old doe at 300 yards in a 20+mph cross wind. She dropped so fast he thought he missed...I was watching from about 400 yards away. I heard the shot and watched her crumple into a pile. I'll probably never use another .308 bullet for hunting.

I should mention that all four rifles hold sub MOA out to 400 yards which is as far as I've tested them.

168 Sierra MatchKing. Don't believe it? Give it a try. Just buy a box of factory Federal Gold Medal Match. That's all you need.

Really, any of the above. I like Nosler BT for deer size game at longer ranges. I hammered an antelope at over 500-yards with a 150-grain and it broke his front shoulder and blew out the other side. If I ever get back to elk country I might choose a lead nose bullet or a Barnes, but I am sure the Nosler BT would be fine as well. It is hard to go wrong with any of them.

I shoot the 150 SST in multiple guns including 308, 30-06, 300 WSM, 300 SAUM. This bullet has never failed me yet. Not all recorded kills were drop on the spot but a high percentage of them were. The animals that did run dropped within 50 yards.

Haha, 'which bullet?' threads always turns into pi$$ing matches...

My opinion:

At 308 velocities.... Anything but Barnes, Barnes, Barnes, Barnes....

Heavy for caliber & high ballistic coefficient to carry/hold energy at ranges out to and past 500 yards, thin jacket for reliable expansion at low impact velocities. The weight and retained energy will take care of expansion.

For 308 Win my personal preference and experience is with 208 gr AMax and 180 gr - 200 gr Accubonds...

I'm sure Bergers would do well also.

At 308 impact velocities, if you're gonna use Barnes, you might as well save $$$ and shoot full metal jackets.... Same result in the end... Pencil-holes... From this:

For 308 the 168 amax has worked incredibly well. Dozens of deer sized game up to and including nilgai DRT
