Which action for 600 yard shooting ?

Just curious what kinda work to the action are you referring to to get em to work? Wheeler has been using a lot of BATs of late judging by his FB builds, firing pin/ignition system is excellent on the BATs now more than ever is what I’m lead to believe.

Everything on a bat needs checked from ignition to the lugs (extractors, ejectors, trigger timing, feeding, lugs lapped, bolt shroud too tight, cocking piece loose, you name it you better check it) Right now I own at least 8 Bat actions. Every single one of them needed some sort of work. Most shooters who have a top notch gunsmith don’t have to worry about it, because the gunsmith goes though the action before they ever see it. Kelbly and Borden’s are much more ready to go out of the box. I’ve got some awesome shooting bats but they’ve been worked on.

They're gonna need a bigger dartboard.

Kelbly's and Borden make great actions as well, but I can't agree with this.

You don’t have to!

Maybe the Nuevos are coming out better, but that’s not a standard bat. It’s specifically made for Chris Harris. I’m not going to get into a Bat bashing because I do like bat actions and the company. Just Most of them need some work before they can really shoot without any problems. Been shooting them since they came out and I’ve owned a lot of them.

I dont want to bash any of them either. We have some great options and I use all 3. I do work on them every week, so my sample size is rather large. Some are better in some areas than others. It comes down to what you want to be working on, and how satisfied you are with the end product.

"ALL" is a pretty bold statement. Kinda like saying Barts Bullets are good but they "ALL" need work to shoot.

I cannot imagine a fellow firearms industry business man would make such a statement towards a quality Company like BAT. I'm sure BAT wouldn't make that claim towards anyone

Maybe I read the post incorrectly but it sure sounds like negative publicity

Hey I love my Bat Actions! I shoot Bat actions. I was asked a direct question and I answered it honestly. If that bothers you sorry! There’s no telling how many I’ve owned over the years, probably 30 plus. Check with a gunsmith or two that know what they are looking for. Working/tweaking on them to get the most out of them is pretty much a given. Go buy a new one and come back and talk to me.

I think any action needs a little more love to be great ; None are perfect out of the box. My first action was a Nesika and I thought is was great... but I had to send it back to them and when it came back it was slicker than goose sh......

It was noticeably better.........

Yep I asked the question and appreciate his honest answer from his personal experiences, I didn’t take it as a bash.. I own a BAT with another on the way his experience wouldn’t sway me either way..Take from it what you will, maybe when or if you buy a BAT you can ask your smith to go over the things Bart mentioned,,you may improve upon your action or not..

You may not be bashing but you talked me out of getting one.

I will put my $.02 in as I shoot a BAT and I started this thread. We as shooters are very fortunate to have the actions available that we do. I have shot a Hall, two Rosenthals, three BATs, a Panda, and I tested a Borden that Jim loaned me back when I was writing for PS. All of these were great actions and I would not bash any of them. All of the BATs that I have owned were obtained used. My latest (got from Joe Krupa in 2009) is an older model (pre-CNC) and it has served me well. However, I believe that Bart has a point (this is also Speedy's opinion) in that the Bats, as well as other customs can be improved by tweaking. Some time ago, I sent my old BAT back to Bruce Thom for a check-up. He did several improvements to the action including a roller cocking piece, a new spring, and timing. After that I sent it to Dave Bruno to have the Tungsten weight added for better ignition. I have a better action than I did before these "tweaks". I don't know if previous owners had any work done on the action, but I am glad that I did. James

Not my intention! To scare anyone off! I’ve shot my way into the Benchrest Hall of Fame Bats! I’ve set 7 World records with Bats! Won two National 2 Guns with them! As well as two National 4 Guns and 600 yard Shooter of the Year. Plus 11 or 12 other National wins. So I’ve been a Bat Man for a long time! I have a brand new Bat in the vault waiting to get built!

The problems I mentioned are simply things to look for. Things that can be a problem! There’s no problem that I mentioned that can’t be easily fix, if you know what to look for.

Bat is a Great Company That makes an outstanding action.

HOWEVER ANY action needs gone over before put into competition! Period!

If you don’t think so I’m glad you’re Shooting it instead of me!

When a top shooter says, BAT, everything needs work, ignition, lug, extraction, ejectors, trigger timing, feed, lug lap, bolt shroud to tight, cocking piece loose. He owns 8 and All need work! He says if you have a top smith you don't have to worry. I don't want to buy a custom action that has to go to a top smith! He says Kelby and Borden are more ready. So yes I'm sold. WOW easy. And yeh I'll NEVER be a top shooter.
