Which action for 600 yard shooting ?

When a top shooter says, BAT, everything needs work, ignition, lug, extraction, ejectors, trigger timing, feed, lug lap, bolt shroud to tight, cocking piece loose. He owns 8 and All need work! He says if you have a top smith you don't have to worry. I don't want to buy a custom action that has to go to a top smith! He says Kelby and Borden are more ready. So yes I'm sold. WOW easy. And yeh I'll NEVER be a top shooter.
Mike,

Thats not what I said!

I named off what needs to be checked! I did not say nor did I mean to imply that all those things are wrong with a Bat and will have to be fixed. Because they are not.

I would say most f class shooters that build on a Bat wouldn't know the difference if their Smith was good but didn't build to the level of benchrest small group standards. If you want to run with the Hall of Famers or be in the top shooters at the comps you go to, then at least have a top Smith look your Bat over and correct whatever it needs. If I ran in this circle and was spending the time and money to shoot my best, and reload my best , I wouldn't hesitate. Bart isn't bashing anything, he's just saying things need to be checked. There have been Smith's mentioned or replied in this thread that go over actions with a fine tooth comb and know what to look for. Not to mention they build world record setting rifles.

I want to clarify my point here. After you work with a good amount of actions, and go out of your way to find any issue that could hold back a rifles potential you will certainly find some if you know what to look for and are willing to spend the time. Sometimes they are minor sometimes not. These things are not always uniform across the entire line. But you do find trends. Each of them have pros/cons and my opinion is any of the 3 mentioned here can be made to compete at the highest level. I have built rifles that have set and hold records on all 3 so have no reservations about them. The context here is high level Benchrest where the top guys are checking and doing everything possible. Its just a fact that manufactured parts are not perfect. Im not perfect either. But how do you think actions got to the level they are now? And theres only one way to continue that trend, and its not to pretend theres no room for improvement.

Mentioning brands always seems to ruffle feathers, so how about another approach that might educate us. Regardless of brand, what are the major and minor issues that we see in custom actions? We can skip factory actions, we all know those are a mess. But what "work" is needed, why is it needed, and how important is it? Opinions anyone?

My xxxxxxx had a lot of cock on close. No matter how I orientated my non trigger hand on the stock I couldn’t keep it from rocking in the bags. After getting it timed, it closes with little effort and I can spend my time concentrating on getting them down range quicker in a condition I like.
It doesn’t shoot any better but I think it will give me an advantage when I learn to get faster and smoother because I suck at reading conditions.
