Which action for 600 yard shooting ?

I see very little mention of Barnard actions.

They are very nice and nothing to complain about. Two now. My last new F open rifle is again a Barnard but this time in .300PRC

Later, Frank
Bartlein Barrels

Jim Borden was recommended to me. He was and is an absolute pleasure to work with. When everyone was quoting 6 months to get a barreled action, he quoted 14 weeks. His Rimrock BR just glides. I've never felt anything so smooth and the rifle is very very accurate.

BAT may be perceived as the best, but you'll not convince me it is worth the insane wait compared to a Kelbly or a Borden, which are my preferred vendors.

Once you go Borden drop port - you’ll never go back... But I would like to have a BAT Neuvo drop port in 6BR to try out... That’s a dream cuz it’s just too far out of reach......

I’ve had a lot of Bat Actions and I love them. However, they take a lot of work to get to really shoot. I’ve got a Kelbley Golden Bear on the way! Very much looking forward to shooting it!

For F-class or even SR BR, unless you're a runner, how much does the action have to do with actual precision/accuracy? I wouldn't think it's much of a factor, nothing like as much as a barrel. Would be interesting if someone was to take the barrel off their super accurate custom action and put it on a Savage or Remington (for example) and see how much difference there really is. I kind of think a high end custom action is like billet parts on a hot rod......bling!

In the scheme of things by the time you get done working on a Remington you’ve got about as much money in it as a custom.

Advantages for a custom
You can shoot faster
Less disturbing the gun on the bags (bolt works easier) better gun handling
Barrels are interchangeable
Drop and change trigger
Adjustable trigger hangers
Better bolt/firing pin fit! Which allows for Shooting hotter loads.
Parts are normally interchangeable ( switch bolts/firing pin assembly/triggers/trigger hangers ).

You can get a non custom to shoot but you’re going to have to work at and work harder to get the same results.

Just my 2 cents!

Since 2004, been using a re-worked 700-Rem for one of my comp rifles, that is smooth similar to a custom, and highly accurate.
Here is what I have all done to it:
  • Trued action face
  • Squared the threads
  • Squared the action lugs
  • Polished the raceways
  • Re-aligned the scope mount holes
  • Installed bolt release
  • Replaced the recoil lug
  • Pinned the recoil lug

  • Squared the bolt face
  • Trued the bolt lugs
  • Bushed the firing-pin hole
  • Replaced the firing-pin assembly
  • Replaced the bolt handle
  • Timed the bolt handle
  • Fluted the bolt body
While I do like it, and it is highly competitive, it's still not a custom, that's value is far less. Can honestly say, wish I would have just went custom with it instead, and configured differently then it can be.

Value?!? I got 'em cause I want 'em. I haven't sokd one of my precious guns (rifle or pistol ) since the '70s. Value? How much for one of your kids? Hope this wasn't too snarky. It really wasn't meant to be.

Sometimes it kind of fun to get the "underdog" to beat the customs, even though it's more work. Just saying.......
A Corvette may be just as quick as a Ferrari, but that's only one small piece of the puzzle. There are things that a rem 700 or savage can't be made to do like a custom does regardless of effort. If those things are important to you, then there is only 1 option.

I have never fired a shot at game at a distance of 600 yds. At this point in life, given the opportunity, I doubt I'd take it, and my .30-'06 is gratifyingly accurate at 100-200-300 yds.
Consider the vital area of the game. Can your rifle group within that heart/lung radius? Better question: Can YOU shoot accurately at that distance under field conditions? I wouldn't take the shot if I wasn't relatively confident that I could connect. Honestly, I'd shoot at paper targets at 500-600 yards, but I'd have to be well prepared to shoot at game at that distance, and I'm not.

How many sighters do you get?

Well, believe it or not, in my younger (and richer) days, I actually had a Ferrari and a Corvette. They were both POSs as transportation, but good for the young ego. I sure wish I had kept them. Not to drive, but to sell to help fund my retirement.

I really don't care what anyone else shoots and no one I know cares what I shoot. I compete with myself. If I happen to shoot better than someone else, on a given day, that's very cool. If not, there's always next week (well, maybe not for much longer, but in general).

Just curious what kinda work to the action are you referring to to get em to work? Wheeler has been using a lot of BATs of late judging by his FB builds, firing pin/ignition system is excellent on the BATs now more than ever is what I’m lead to believe.
