Which 6mm Match Bullet for Prairie Dogs?

I been shooting Hornady Match ammo with 108gr ELDM for prairie dogs in my 6 creed. I haven't noticed any ricochet and they kill good enough. The rifle is both my PD rig for the wind and 1000 + yard plinker. I am about to start reloading for it. I was going to go with 105 or 108 berger hybrid, but now I am worried they may just pencil through and ricochet. Was also considering 107 matchkings, dtacs, or just stick with the ELDM.

One good thing about Hornady is all their ELDM and vmax are always in stock local and online. It shoots the factory ammo consistently at .5 moa. Im sure I would shave a bit off that with hand loads.

Id try lighter vmax, maybe 87gr. I have only used the 108 eldm in my 6 creed. Only shot coyotes and javelina. Dont like the performance on coyotes. Never tried pdogs with it. Cuts straight through the javelina but does not blow them up.

Trying to find something that works well for both 1k + yard targets and prairie dogs. I shoot vmax in the 204 till the wind gets crazy. I realize nothing is going to explode like a varmint bullet.

108 eldm for 1000 yard plinking and 87 vmax for pdogs. I've shot the pdogs with my 105 amax's and may use the 87 vmax this year, they look promising. The only reason I would do this is to save my 105 Amax's for 1000 yard shooting. I do have some 108 eldm bullets to test.

Hmm not sure if my barrel will shoot the 110 sierra. It says minimum 1:7. Mine is 1:7.5.
Check around with some shooters that shoot this bullet and asked to buy a few from them. You could also post a WANTED in the classifieds here for some. If they don't work for you, your only out a few dollars with no left over bullets.

Depending on what you really want to do there are 3 hunting VLD's from Berger in 87,95 and 105. I have been shooting the 105 in my 243AI and the 95 in 6Dasher with good accuracy.

I use the 108 ELDM's for far away PD's in a 6mm creedmoor with H4831SC. Just killed 3 at 960 yards with them. Not much expansion at that distance but plenty closer. I pull that rifle out starting around 500 yards - I use something with less recoil closer. 22BR

I also dont pull it out till the distances are long or the wind is howling. Although my 25lb creed with a break recoils way less than an 8lb 223.

I refuse to hunt aywhere that isn't hilly. I want solid ground behind my varmints. No ricochets.

Unfortunately there would be little hunting then. The hills all have trees on them and the cattle can hide in there, but most of the area is flat for miles. A line of site where you can see for miles and frangible bullets is all you can really do much of the time. You also need to learn where the roads are that you may not be able to see and where cattle hang out. When in doubt, drive down range and verify nothing is back there and nobody could come from down range.

For what you are looking to accomplish, the 108ELD-M is probably the best you will find. Any plastic tips, in my opinion, are going to open up better than a match hollow point. The 87 Vmax would be great option if you can get them to group (I certainly couldn't). For a short while, I was getting 1/4MOA out at 600 yards with the 108ELDMs...much better than I had expected. I then ran 300 hard rounds through on a prairie dog trip; after, it never shot again, lol.

If you can't get the 108ELD-M to shoot well and want to shoot match HP bullets, I've had good success chucking the bullet in a drill, opening with a micro drill bit, and then filing a little to thin the leading edge (making the jacket paper thin on leading edge, thus making bullet frangible without loosing too much BC...all for the sake of making them more explosive, as I'd rather not shoot at all if the critters aren't fly'n!Screenshot_20220606-183130_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20230722_072524_Gallery.jpg
