The thing that got me was people would pull off the road and let you pass if they saw you barreling up behind them. Even the police! Don't know if it's still like that but thought if I had a choice to have another home away from home, it'd be there.

I wouldn't move .
All my family lives no more the 20 miles away. Except the one in the army. I have lived in the same house for 53 years . And I have the same wife for 55 years. All the friend I have left live in 30 miles. The gulf where I fish is 12 miles. The gun range is 28 miles. My house is 48' above sea level So no water problems. My Friend and my gun smith is 22 miles . The private range i shoot 2 or more times a week is another friend . We have at his house has all the toys for shooting . WE have a new acoustic target system on the way. Our gun smith lives 1 mile away from the private range.
WE are talking about enclosing the shooting benches and putting air condition in.
I can't think of a better place to live. Larry

I live near Sedona, AZ about 80 miles north of Ben Avery, have "my personal" range (600 yds) on forest service land about 3 miles from the house, not as hot as the southern part of the state in summer, gets a dusting of snow in the winter, most of the "liberals" Iv'e met here here are even pro gun, so much to do here if you love the outdoors, one of the most beautiful places on earth...

What do ya say we shed the wives and do a long vacation down there? Ever been to Del Rio? Best bass fishing in the states. Crystal clear water in the Amistad resevoir. They have a restaurant that does barbecued dove that's "to die for". Served to your table by the cutest waitresses, this side of the border. 😄😄😄😜Josh I'll pick you up tomorrow morning!😱

I'M READY! Just have to get an excuse to be relieved of jury duty the end of the month. I already was excused once this year due to a hog hunt in Turkey, TX and "I'm going bass fishing, can I be excused?" will probably be met with "Do you want the sheriff to bring you or can you drive yourself?"
Sounds like a plan for next year though. ;D 8)

To get enough land, reasonably priced for a range, I would consider west Texas and southern NM. There is some winter in both of those areas, including occasional snow, but winter is usually mild. The unloved season in both of these areas is spring, when the winds come. However, if you have your own range and like to shoot in the mornings, then the wind will not be that much of an issue. I live in west Texas and south central NM and I get less shooting time in summer due to temperature, I'm too lazy to get up early. Southern NM is much warmer than the Albuquerque area. In fact I would stay south of Socorro, NM if cold temps are an issue.

Arkansas. Ive lived all over and the natural state has to be the best there is bar none. Best of all we have trees, grass, reasonable land and a nice infrastructure

The GREATEST state in the entire nation is, without argument, Texas. NOW before y'all jump on my back, I want to enunciate the downsides to this state. Because of the wealth of this state, buying tracks of land, outside of the desert region near Big Bend National Park, is out of reach for most "average" citizens. There are pockets of "Less than Stellar" beauty, as in South Texas. However, South Texas contains "probably" more Boone and Crockett deer than any other section of the country.

The Texas Hill Country is arguably the prettiest area in this country! Because of it's spectacular beauty, it also qualifies as some of the most expensive "country" in the country! East Texas is still somewhat affordable.. It has been mentioned in previous replies about the San Angelo area, being a good place to consider. It is SMOKIN' HOT out there, yet with little humidity. It is primarily a flat, agrarian area, not the "prettiest" in the state. Travel from home to anywhere out that way is pretty much a trek, not a hop, skip and jump to the nearest "city", as it were..

Having said all that, it is still THEE GREATEST STATE IN THE NATION, BAR NONE!

I know this is somewhat "rambling" but how do you "briefly" describe a state as vast as Texas?

I love texas too (grew up and graduated college in east tx) but the no income tax thing will backfire on you with their other traps- school tax was the big one, car licenses, inspections, drivers licenses, various other things. Texas is great but for the dollar you cant beat arkansas!

I'm surprised TN hasn'the come up. Between Nashville and the Tri-Cities you have beautiful hill country to the Smokies. Western TN more rolling hilks and forest land. Moderate summers and winters. NO state income tax. About at gun friendly as any state out there. Oak Ridge has a private 1k range that used to shoot league every Monday (may still) and AEDC has been having a 600 and 1k match each month. There are 600 yard ranges scattered throughout the state.

Land can be expensive, but if you're not looking to live in a hot zip code (seriously doubt that with this crowd) and you aren't looking to buy a 60+ acre farm with good soil, it's not bad.

If i couldn't live here my second choice would probably be east Texas.

South east Arizona. Willcox area, Dos Cabezas mountains or the Chiricahua mountain range.
Home of he Apache Indians. 40 acres of land for $30,000 or less, lower than average home prices, temperatures average high in August is upper 90's, highs in January are around 60, Tucson has a 1000 yard range and Ben Avery is a few hours away. Lots of BLM and state land to hunt.

Well, I am in the market for a house...and being indecisive, i am looking in Central NY (where I currently live) and in Colorado (Canon City area) where my son is in school.

here I can get a 1970's 1300 ft rancher with a beautiful view of our mountains, a 100x60 foot heated, insulated older workshop and one acre. The house needs a total cut and re-do. Taxes as is are 6K plus a year. It is listed at $195K. It would need $125 K to fix it up and then I would have a 1600 foot ranch...

In CO i can get a 2500 sq ft house, built in the 1990's, with 35 acres, a barn and a three car garage, see Pikes Peak and the city, for @$250K....and $1200 a year in taxes.

leaving behind Andrew Cuomo, Hilary Clinton, Chucky ducky Schumer and all the socialists who are sucking NY dry suddenly doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

CO is shall issue, no assault weapons BS except mag size and all 100 of mine are grandfathered, has Prairie dogs and has trout. Ok, they also have dope smoking liberals, but at least they are slow and generally are self-steralizing.

Heading out there in Oct to scope it out.
