Where to put flags

Link

Silver $$ Contributor
I need help reading our range.

We have a L shaped clearing. The shooting line is a open field on both sides to the 100 yd target, then the firing line is a straight path to the right through the woods for the next 300 yards. The predominant wind comes across the first 100 from 3 o'clock then seems to turn down the last 300 at 6 o'clock. We usually shoot 100, 200 then 300 yards in one setting. Where is the most important place to put flags and how many ?

thanks

The open field definitly will make the dominating condition so needs one out in the open just before the woods. I have flagged the center of these type of places with shoot over flags and had the best luck. If that's possible, otherwise go with mirage.

Really want to know the full story.....set off smoke bombs. Do this for what appears to be the prevailing conditions at the time of day you normally shoot. What they show will tell you the best place where to place flags. Repeat this process for other conditions encountered at your particular range. The air currents smoke shows will surprise you.

When you use smoke bombs, try mixing some bleach with auto trans fluid. Makes Plenty smoke..

Please expound on this. Mix (proportions please) then run?, light and run? or light and walk?.:rolleyes:

Op, even within the trees can be strong spots due to the lay of the land. Such as a low area in the land that attracts the same tunnel effect. Walk around with a long piece of survey tape on a stick and find out what's going on. Or bomb the place kinda sounds fun!

Thank you. Might try it. My range is tree and berm lined on both sides. When it's blowing, I see leaves swirling in 30 foot circles. This might give me a better idea of what's going on.

I once was tasked with disposal of some ordnance from 1969-70...a pile of CN or CS, can't remember which. Went to the abandoned range where no one was supposed to be. Sgt and I torched off a dozen cannisters of gas, after licking a finger and holding it up to check wind direction. We had quite a cloud of gas billowing into the trees off the side of the range about 100 yards away when off in the distance a camo bowhunter came coughing and choking out of the treeline. We left. It did say no trespassin!

I learned a lot about wind that day!!! :D

I vote for the smoke! video please!

At our range, 1 or 2 days a year in the spring the cotton woods bloom and you can see exactly what the wind does. We recently spent millions on a baffle replacement and the newly designed baffles suck for the turbulence they create. The sides of our range are 10' berms however at 100/200 yards there are cut outs in the berm for vehicle access. This also creates turbulence.

I have 3 flags, I place one at 60 yards, one at 110 yards and another at 220 yards. The near flag has the biggest indicator of wind, the far flags are just nice to haves.

Well, I just tried the bleach/trans fluid in my back yard. It did not work.:( I even threw a thimble of gas in and lit it. Nothing. Looks like no smoke for the 4th. Glad I have some Roman candles and bottle rockets:).
