What's going on with UPS and FedEx...if anything?

So 2 weeks ago, FedEx delivers a package that needs to be signed for. I have to wait outside because they will drive past my house if I don't flag them down. I hear the truck down the street. So I race outside, and am at the end of the driveway before he fully stops. He is in a bad mood and I can sense it.) He asks for (my I.D I said it's inside. He then asked "how do I know you are who you say you are?" I show him my phone and show him the tracking number. He then asks "is this a gun?!" I said no and even if it was, it's none of your business." (It was a firearm.)
Never been asked that before.

Then today UPS drops off primers, and the delivery guy has done my route for years. Super nice guy. He comes to the door and says oh, these are primers?!. What kind of gun do you have?" I said it was my grandfather's old 308win and closed the door.

What is going on? Why are all of a sudden the delivery drivers getting real nosey? Or is it a coincidence?

I think a lot of it the retailers are requiring a signature now. I order a lot of parts and reloading supplies and 9 times out of 10 any more they require a signature. As far as them knowing or asking what's in the box I think most of them know when it says Powder Valley or something something precision or the like they just kind of assume what it is and make talk to be friendly. Most of the UPS guys around here are clients of mine so we always stop and talk shop for a minute when they deliver.

haha yeah, true. So I do understand the UPS guy, especially when the package has an explosives placard of the side. The fedex guy weirded me out though. I have read that Fedex in some areas is fine and not in others, but I avoid it like the plague because they refuse to stop if a package needs to be signed for.

Over the past 5 years Fedex and UPS seemed to be hiring just one level above Meth Head for their drivers. Prime is maybe 2 levels above but not much better. I used to look forward to getting packages and at one time had drivers that knew how to read my signs and could actually stay on the gravel road without veering into the field while messing around with their phones. Now, I go out of my way to order from places that use USPS or I'll go to a flagship store 50 miles away to pick something up. I'm getting ready to ditch Chewy just cause of Fedex. I live down long and windy dirt roads and driving like a normal person seems to be above their skill level. I don't think they are asking you questions for any database, I think they are just nosy little SOBs and maybe after they inevitably get fired, they are making a map of places they can do some home invasions. I don't put anything past these guys.

I *think* Fedex and UPS may require a signature if the declared value of parcel is above $x or, if the parcel is declared HAZMAT.
That said, if I am selling a 'scope, I ship signature required at my expense (yes, the shipper pays for that) because frankly, I had one customer who had porch pirates steal his scope, and I'm not having that again. I know it's a pain, but I don't know what else to do.
BTW, at the time, the shipping aggregator I use's insurance loss or damage *in transit* not after delivery, i.e., porch pirates. Now I beleive it does, but since I pay for signature delivery<, Neither I nor my customers pay for insurance.
Yes, it's a PITA. But it's just a reflection of today's society.

Fedex is now requiring adult signature items to be signed for with a valid ID. This changed about 18 months ago. Whether they always do it or not is a crap shoot.

+1

I had a Fedex delivery about 3 weeks that clearly noted "adult signature required". Not only did I not sign anything, the package (8# of gun powder), was dropped at the door, no door bell ring, nada. Fortunately my dog let me know someone was or had been there. Very hit or miss.

My UPS store, in Boise, Id. would NOT Ship, ANY Guns or even,..Gun Parts !
A Half mile away,.. FED-X,.. would ship,.. Both !!
$35.00 to ship, a barreled action 2,500 Miles with, $500. Insurance and Signature req'd.

tells the numbers of lost packages for ups, fed x
Good Info! I've apologized to almost everyone I've ever shipped a firearm to. Even with a box cutter, it'd take you a minute to get it open. Definitely a good tip on the name on the outside. I just sent something to Kauger arms. It made it there, but I did put the name above the address.

I also agree with USPS. I was listening to a morning FM show, last week and USPS got a complaint that people on a route near me, didn't get mail. They hid cameras in the truck and caught her red handed.

My delivery driver will ask what are you reloading in a sorta of kid in a candy store voice. I think it’s just different drivers have different mind sets. We all have hard days at work. So I wouldn’t jump to any conspiracy theory’s just yet. The government doesn’t need driver input to know what your buying or doing.

Jan 18th UPS delivered a couple of boxes of 22-250 ammo I purchased on GB, email from seller informed me it would be shipped UPS and there would be an adult signature required. I got home after work and the box was outside just sitting beside my front door, stranger thing was the shipping box didn't have an black and white diamond sticker on it.
I'm pretty sure it was the regular driver on this route and he usually rings doorbell and gets my signature or my mother's if I'm not home.

I had a signature required pkg from mcmillan for my new stock. Waited all day. At 9pm I see the truck. Some black girl, about 300lbs, gets out and slowly waddles up. She hands me 2 pigs and doesn't ask for a signature. I was expecting 1 pkg. I look at the 2nd one and it's not mine. It belongs 2 streets over. I give it back to her. She says " ok, thanks" and waddles back to truck.
UPS, FedX, USPS...they all suck.

I bought a Bell & Carson stock a few weeks ago and get a E Mail says package will be delivered tomorrow and required a signature. I’m still working so I put a sheet of paper on all my storm doors with signature chest high wrote with a sharpie pen in big letters to put package in the cab of the truck. So I get home my stock is on the porch exposed to the rain note is plain as day right there . The Truck wasn’t locked and He had to walk past the truck twice to put it there . I wasn’t happy

As a retired 35 year UPS driver I can say their standards have gone way down.
Used to be that one driver would be on the same route for years and build up a relationship with their customers.
Couldn't have a beard or hair touching the collar, now I see guys that have hair longer than
my wife's and full beards.
I had people give me their garage codes or leave a note with a key so I could put into the house and lock it backup. Some had my phone number and would meet me on-route to pickup a pkg. early.
Everyone would waive when you drove by.
Some would tell me that their dog loved me but not the Fed-Ex driver.
Times do change, hard to find good help and harder to find people willing to work 40-50 hrs a week.
I see people in the little town I delivered to and they all say, wish you were back, not the same.
Not going to be any better in the future, is what it is..
