Bob that sounds like a Very nice rifle you have, love the caliber.
Only thing I am wondering about is the terrain in Southern Alabama, I've been under the impression that there is a LOT of vegetation and the terrain is somewhat flat (I really don't know) , If it is this way a scope that has a bottom end of 2 to whatever power might be a better solution. If not, you will be fine.

Really interested in how you do, so please let me know.

I have been watching this thread with interest. There are many and varied cartridges and bullet weights to cleanly take the deer that are sought after. However, if you were to take a cross section / average of the bulk of these excellent rounds, you would find that the 125-150gr. class bullet weight seems to encompass most of the list. These projectiles are exiting the bore at somewhere between 2800 and 3000f.p.s. Virtually all of these cartridges will cleanly kill deer. However, NONE of them will cleanly take any "Big-Game" animal with a poor shot or with a bullet "less than capable" of taking deer regularly. Methinks that the "shooter" has become the REAL key in today's world of excellent bullets, rifles and our effervescent pursuit of accuracy, that does in fact, spill over to the hunting genre! So my hat is off to the HUNTER who plies his skills with the finest equipment and shooting ability, combined with discretion on just how far to shoot, to amass the humane kills we seem to experience with regularity..

2 6.5 Creedmoor's with 140 VLD's, 6.5x47 with 130 VLD's, 30-06 with 168 VLD's, and 2 cars.

The cars have been known to cause a lot of damage to the meat, and they sometimes don't leave a good blood trail. I found earlier in the year that the cars can also be used for hogs. My insurance company wishes I would go away.........

Forgot to add: The rifles are all wearing NF NSX's. I don't run any optics on the cars, but they are very accurate regardless. My newish Lexus IS 350 FSport tends to punt the critters off to one side (extremely low), but my wife's BMW seems to work better dragging them for a while. I suppose it doesn't really matter as the outcome is the same.

I might be able to get my cousin to let us do some long-ish range "hunting" up the gas pipeline off his back porch. If we do, I'll take this:

284 Shehane. Borden BRM R/L/R action. Borden blueprinted Jewel trigger. Tracker stock in natural walnut looking laminate. Harrells rings that I polished myself. NF Competition scope.

Mike Ezell did the barreled action. Doyle Anglin did the stock work. I needed Mike to move on to another of my projects.

I bought the reamer, dies and brass on here. IMHO, it needs a little more FB to get the junction of the bearing surface and boat tail out up into the sized section of the neck with the 10-15 thou of jump that I want to run. It will especially need more when I convert to the Scenar L after I run out of Hybrids.

I bought the NF on here. It's a 2013 model made for the U.S. National F-Class team. It has a reticle like the FCR-1. I like it a lot. Wish I had nothing but.

People on here, Steve Blair, Erick Cortina and you helped me get it shooting. It is amazingly consistent and easy to shoot.

It is a beautiful rifle>>of that there is no doubt! The "normal freebore" for the 180 Hybrids is a .188. It works for the 180 Hybrids, BUT I believe the Hybrids have the shortest bearing surface of ANY 180 class bullet. On the other hand, the Lapua 180 Scenar "L" has, undoubtedly the L-O-N-G-E-S-T bearing surface of ANY 7mm projectile>>PERIOD! After shooting them, I am convinced a .250freebore is minimally necessary to get that bearing surface ABOVE the neck / shoulder junction.. I used a reamer with a .220freebore and have 600 rounds on my barrel now. I keep the Scenars 2-3K OFF the lands and it barely clears the neck / shoulder junction.

Well I hope you get a chance to use that rifle on deer this year>>>I am quite certain the deer will end up in your freezer and the head on your fireplace!

Currently using my McGowen barreled AR in 458 Socom. It's perfect for the close range deep brush I hunt in for deer and hogs. Loaded with 300 grain Barnes TTSX it's a compact, powerful package.

When I need more reach I often use a Shilen barreled 700 in 270 Win.

I use others for variety, but those are my goto rifles.

Her name is Veera.
A savage LA single shot conversion, dressed in a choate stock and sporting a light varmint 24" 338 edge barrel under a 6-24x50 bushnell tactical.
5x5 whitetail buck 10/24/14 at 804 yards/ 20 degree downward and a 6x7 bull elk 10/26/14 at 915 yards/ 10 degree upward. Both clean and quick with the 300 grain smk.
It was one seriously GOOD weekend.

Changling,

the area I am headed to is between Georgiana and Andalusia, this is a very hilly area with some open areas for farming, tree harvest etc.

if you go to Google earth, and scan the area between and around these two towns you will see what I am talking about - ridges run 400ft and valleys 225 for miles east and west and going north it is 35 miles between these towns.

the undulating flats begin about 15 miles south of Andalusia but still there is elevation vacillation.
deer a day etc/ make it an interesting area to hunt.

Until Indiana changes their regulations (which they are looking to do next year), I'll be toting my Savage MLII into the woods again this year.
