what cartridge in a true heavygun br rifle ?

I have a light in 6 dasher, and would like to add a true heavy gun, not just shoot the light up one class. suggestions ?
300 wsm ?
300 win mag ?
????????
thinking 18-22 lbs or so complete
no super big cartridges, like my shoulder where it is.

If you're confident in your abilities to load the dasher, there are plenty of people who do extremely well with them in a heavy gun. @WIB3 is one of them.

Then you will have one set of bullets, one set of dies, one case to learn, etc.

Especially if you're planning on keeping it on the light side of a HG (as you said 18-22#)

I don't know what your LG set-up is......I have seen a few that had the ability to add a whole lot of weight to for HG....;)

Regards
Rick

I’ve wondered this as well, if it’s IBS 5 shots per relay then why bother setting up and gettin the tracking dialed in on a second rifle.
Unless there is something I don’t understand, and thats’ always possible.
IBS 600 is 10 shots per relay. 2 targets X 5 shots each.

I am not sure everyone read the question.
I DO NOT WANT TO SHOOT A DASHER AS A HEAVY GUN
I want to shoot something different , bigger and heavier....what I WANT TO DO.
SO YES A 300 WSM FITS, anything else ?
anyone look at the 30prc or the 6.5 prc as a 600/1000 round ?
I got time to work on this and collect bits and pcs.

It seems to me that long range benchrest cartridge selection depends on the wind conditions that you expect to experience during the match. For lighter conditions, the Dasher and 6BRA seem to be able to shoot smaller than larger cartridges, but if the conditions are more challenging then heavier bullets may prevail. This is not from any experience, but rather from looking at match results and equipment lists. It seems to me that you should shoot whatever caliber you think has the greatest probability of winning a particular match, no matter what the caliber, or rifle weight category. Switching this over to short range, if your light varmint rifle shoots smaller than your heavy varmint, would you really shoot the heavier rifle in its class if the object is to do as well as you can?

this is kinda the thought, tho I would shoot it every time. to have a rifle that is bigger/heavier in bullet and case(while keeping my shoulder in place).
shoot it all the time so I know how when needed.
while I compete I do it for my enjoyment.
leaning to the wsm or win mag, but going without a belt would be nice.
thanks

All I did was tell you what wins and of course you can look at the records and make your own decision. I always shot two LG. Dashers but a Dasher and a BR Imp. will work too. .... lol.... jim

The IBS and everyone else says 5 shots is fine for light gun. That is fine if you want to promote small grouping. 10 shots is more realistic and historically more correct for Benchrest. As far as the dasher, BRA or any variant of the the BR case goes, if tuned properly, damn tough to beat in any condition. I can get 10 shots off in 19 seconds and there’s others who are faster. The 30’s have a higher BC but the 6mm’s are faster. In ideal conditions, dashers and 6mm variants can’t be beat.

An 80lb Dasher with a break, tracking correctly and loaded correctly, with quality bullets is tough to beat. The shooter will have the ability to catch the same conditions for ten shots. 30’s shoot impressing well but move more on the bags. My friend M Kline holds the ten shot world record @ 2.815”. Love him too death, but would like nothing else to decrease that size.

If the conditions at Williamsport would have been a little nicer his record would have been broken. Believe me there are some awesome rifles out there that can do just that.
This coming year is going to be the year. 300 WSM or 6mm Dasher or 6.5x47 are good choices.
