what cartridge in a true heavygun br rifle ?

...... But a good lg will shoot 1"s when conditions allow.
Are you referring to 10-shots (like Matt is referring to) or 5-shot targets?

Myself, for 10-shot targets feel my 54-lb 6Dasher has an advantage over my LT-Gun 6Dasher.
Consistently easier for me to control tracking do to more repeatable return to battery, is my reasoning.

I shot a 5.650" 10 match agg shooting with Williamsport, used my rb,rp LG. Multiple guys have shot smaller 10 match HG aggs here, also with LGs. I know Murtiff broke it as well, not sure what he used. Its smaller in the IBS too, also a LG. My 6 match was a 4.343", so far as I know, still not broken. With the tracking and gun handling advantages they have, they should be dominant. I just dont see it. I think the biggest reason to have one is to shoot a wsm. I prefer a bedded or glued action to a barrel block, I also believe a rifle has to be light enough to recoil. If I was going to build myself a HG it would be built like a LG just heavier.

Ultimately is not the goal to shoot small groups and high scores. To my knowledge the the 10 shot goal to beat still stands at 2.815”. Aggregates are nice but I would rather have bragging rights to the World Record.

Roy is right small group tells you of the day! The Agg. tells you the shooters ability. If you look at Williamsports records you will see Matt and Tom Have been at the top of there game for quite some time. And that is not luck. These guys have it together when it comes to 1000 yard shooting my money is on them. Oh and when it comes to any major matches like Nationals or W/O you will find them at the top. That is the reason I like being in the same relay with these guys, it tells you whether your up to snuff.

My opinion of a true heavy gun in thousand-yard benchrest is a 300 WSM or 300 Win Mag 300 boo boo or some variance of a 30 caliber unless you want to shoot a 6mm improved of sorts in a light gun fashion if you don't want to carry something heavy to the line.IMG_1508497735084.jpg 20181016_174928-1-1.jpg
Here's a true variant of a light - heavy gun in a 6mm of some variation not a 30 caliber.

Here is a heavy gun. It is a Dasher and is capable of shooting 10 record rounds in 23 seconds. It finished second at Williamsport this past year in the 10 match aggregate for group. It was out of 1st by .0200”. First was an 300WSM.

Here is another heavy gun that I acquired back in Aug. It is capable of shooting much faster. They both weigh in the 70lb range. This one has a break and does not leave the point of aim for 10 shots. The last time I shot it I never looked through the scope for all 10 shots. It shot a 100 with a 4.719” group. Find a caliber that you feel comfortable with and stay with it. There are certain cartridges that just shoot better than others. Take time to carefully do your homework and enjoy the sport.
