What are competative MOA's from 500 to 1,000 yards

At 600 I would want a rifle thats capable of shooting mid ones or smaller in good conditions. At 1000 Id want mid twos or smaller. This is for 5 shot groups in good conditions and to be very competitive. As a new shooter, I would not let that stop you from going to a match. Even if your rifle is not tuned all that well theres still a lot of things to learn about BR shooting that you can only learn by attending matches. Plus thats the place you will get the best advice on how to shrink your groups.

I really want to get into competitive benchrest shooting but I have no idea what good MOA's are from 500 yards and beyond.

Thanks all.
Great question and one I have been asking myself. I shot my first local match a few months ago. There is a lots going on that you have to be on top of.

Conditions determine what a good moa is on any particular day. If your gun can agg 2 inches in normal conditions, it can be competitive. Whether you can drive it that well in normal conditions is another story.

Here is a link to the 600/1000 yard Benchrest results. That should give you an idea. The level of competitiveness can vary depending on the ease or difficulty of the conditions on a given day. If you come across low scores and high Aggs, it likely indicates a challenging day at the range.

Thanks for the link. I have zero experience interpreting these results, but at a few of the 1000y competitions I looked at the light gun aggs were better than the heavy gun aggs. Is this common? Is it due to competitors putting more time and money into light guns? For some reason I always thought the heavy guns had the most potential for smaller aggs.

I ask, because eventually I'll build one of these types of guns. But my finances will only be able to afford 1.

Light gun is 5 shots. Heavy gun is ten shots. Shots for record are shot blind. Meaning all your record shots are fired in succession without feed back.

Mr Wick,

everyone’s idea of “competitive” is different, but I believe slightly under .5 MOA would be competitive at 1000 yards, and .3-.4MOA for 600 yards. And those same numbers shot in F class would put you right near the top of the list.

If you are limited to one rifle make it LG. You can then shoot light and heavy class.

Have fun is the key, gonna cost some bucs to be competitive 600 yds 1.5 inches 1000yds 6 inches and better but in the 3 to 6 inch groups will make you feel good and may win some places, some days....... a win makes you feel good...even if it's a relay you make it to the shootoff..participation trophy for me is good
