Walmart gunsafe

I am looking into buying a new gun safe and Walmart has a lot of them on their website which fit in our budget. Have any of you here had any experience in buying them from Walmart?
Thanks, John

The ones I have seen at Wally World are the key entry type not much, I went to Costco bought a Winchester fire rated safe for $550? then went to Sams club and bought a Sentry fire rated safe near the same If it's not fire rated forget it. And it depends where you keep them. I keep both in my garage attached to the house. So a house fire reaches some where near 1200 degrees and most of the heat burn up. I have dehumidefiers in both never have any moisture problems. Due yourself a favor

Well put ourway. Most of us have a ton of money tied up in our firearms. In the event of a total loss, your insurance company will most likely not cover all of your losses. Firearms, jewelry, silver, art and a few others have limited coverage on standard insurance policies and many don't realize it. I called my agent to discuss it and was suprised at how little would be covered and I would need a separate policy to cover them all. I have a good fire rated safe (need another one), place all firearms in Sack-Ups and use a good dehumidifier to protect them.

I had a friend that lost everything in a total loss house fire and the insurance didn't cover everything. that is when I called my agent to discuss my options.

I believe in this saying; you don't have to buy the best, but buy the best you can afford. Your choice in a safe is a big decision and choosing the wrong one can really cost you in the event of a fire.

With Barbara and I, it is a budget thing but I do want to buy a true fire rated safe that would be hard to get into. I don't need a huge safe so that brings down the cost. I truly don't see myself buying many more rifles at my age and more limited places to shoot within driving range. My gas tank on the Tacoma took $50 to fill up, after all. A good safe that held a true 16 guns would be large enough. Walmart has a lot of safes online only for a variety of prices. I don't intend to buy a cheap 12 gauge "cabinet."
Thanks for the replies.

Wallys world carries the dial safes out here seasonally, same one is at Home Depot & they have them year round and run about $360-$380 all the time. If you have a Sutherlands home improvment place they carry the biggest 7 broadest line of safes in town usually.
A pal got one and its good for 6 guns and thats all he needed.

Here are my thoughts on a "safe". If you don't have a concrete floor to mount them too other than in your basement, don't bother. Lets say you want to put it on the second floor of your house and your house catches on fire. It falls through the floor to the first floor and then to the basement. How much do you think will be left to any of your firearms after the fall? How much do you think will be left after the house sits on the safe and burns for a few hours? If it lives through a house fire and doesn't come through the floor then it probably didn't get hot enough to justify having a fireproof safe to begin with. I have metal gun cabinets because I don't have a "safe" place to put a real gun safe. I have rider policy's on things like my firearms, tools and welders in the garage and even my truck is insured differently than normal. When the place goes up in flames, I walk away and start over.

I didn't buy a safe at Walmart but have purchased other large items like big screen TV and a shelf unit. Walmart did exactly what they promised - got it all loaded up and sent me on my way. I wouldn't hesitate buying a safe from them provided it was a good safe. I just checked their website and they have added a lot of makes and models.

When I have to spend $250 a day just to shoot prairie dogs, I have to save money in any way I can, even if it includes shopping at Walmart.

I buy a safe for protection against theft, not fire. Insurance will cover fire damage, and theft too I suppose, but I spoke with a detective with the police department here and he said he has never seen even a cheap gunsafe cracked by a thief.

I ended up buying a Browning Safeguard in Salem for $799 at Wholesale Sports. They loaded it on my truck and a friend of mine helped me unload and move it in place. It is just what I needed and I feel pretty good about it.

John it doesnt matter what kind you have as most criminals are so stupid that they couldnt get into a cardboard safe if it was painted to look like one.And by the way,GOOD CHOICE as I have a browning gold with a lockable sargent and greenleaf lock.No electronic locks for me,LOL

I believe most guns stolen where I live in Oregon are those who leave them in the gun racks in their pick ups. My safe is locked in a room where no one really can see it. A determined thief will go elswhere rather than spend a lot of time and noise and get nothing - that's my opinion, anyway. When I worked in the jail, most of the inmates - dopers & idiots - robbed their buddies.

Hey guys,
Take a look at the BurglarBomb (just google it). For $69 you get a nice simple deterrant that makes you grin each tme you disarm it, knowing some stupid cracked-out teen would be crawling around your gunroom with snot-ropes hanging out his nose after setting it off, but would be none the worse for the wear. And it would be doubtful he would come back for a second run. I have been hit 14 times (dont ask) with OC, and once was too many.

John,
I am glad you got your gun safe, a cardboard box probably would have been just as good as anything that china mart would have had. Looks like you got a pretty good deal anyway. I have three big Liberty's and a Cannon and I have another fat boy at the locally owned True Value dealer just waiting for me to finish my floor. There isn't a safe out there that can't be broke into if you know what you are doing. My friend that owns the true value store has videos that he brought back from the last trade fair they had, two big men with pry bars and the knowledge of where to use them were into the high end safe in no time at all, the difference is fire rating and insurance companies likes the big ones, also most people don't know how to get into them and if you have them bolted down and full of guns there pretty much a deterrent for most thieves . My safes weigh right at 1000 lbs empty I think.Bolt yours down and don't advertise you have one and you will be a lot safer with it then without it ;)

Snert,
14 times and the occupation your in?? they must have been stupid or something, I guess its the location. 14 times though I think I would place a claymore in the gun room to heck with a smoke bomb ;D

When one considers the amount of money he/she has invested in their guns, purchasing a safe with good security and fire rating is a wise choice. I have an old Champion safe that I purchased many years ago. It is fire rated at 1750 degrees for 2 hrs, has the best locking system made in the US, weighs more than 1700 pounds and is anchored to the slab with 4 3/4 x 5 anchors. It is also used to house all of our sensitive documents, etc, etc.

All I am saying is, yes I have had 14 exposures to OC at the 5.5 or more % and NONE were pleasant. Sometimes though, it is the best answer for a "problem", and it tends to splatter a bit. None were in my residence...all on the job. So, that is why i got the Burglar Bomb for my gun room. Cheap, simple and as long as you are careful (not to drop something on the actuator or trip) you are good to go.
