Varmint Hunter Claimants

I agree with wmdron. Unethical. Had the same thing happen when I sent a 2yr renewal ($70) to Precision Shooting. They folded a month later, but kept my money! Thanks a lot. I do miss that magazine a lot though.

I'm with you on the PS mag script. I did the same thing. They may be straight shooters on the range but not very straight at taking care of there long time paying customers.
PS: I miss it too.

Got my letter yesterday and just got done reading it closely then saw this thread. Main thing that gets my goat is the way they folded up overnight basically rolling up the carpet and turning the lights out. I sent them a check for 2 year renewal last April then found out they went under. I wonder how Jeff and Jacquie Rheborg can even look in the mirror!? No notice or anything from them! Really Pi$$es me off! Anyway I had forgotten about it until I got letter and now I am gonna deep six the letter and not worry about it.

VHA had sold just damn near everything to keep that magazine going as long as they could. I see statements here about how "I'm good with Adobe I could do that.." Blah blah blah... Try it.. VHA was down to bare minimum for quite some time trying to keep the wheels rolling.. SHITTY ECONOMY!! THANKS FOR ALL YOUR OBAMA VOTES!!
As far as you bashing Jeff and Jackie leads me to believe that YOU do not know these people. The jamboree they held was an "appreciation" for members. It was not an event to make the VHA money. IT COST THEM!!
In 2011, when they had to cancel it, it was because there was no safe lodging to be had in Pierre. This I KNOW because I traveled back to MY home town of Pierre. To help MY friends and family sandbag both towns.. Jeff Rheborg and I ran a good crew, 8 or 10 of us, with the help of a group from SD national guard (147th from Brookings SD) made OVER 11,000 sand bags PER DAY for 10 days strait at 18 hours per day.On the 11th day, as we were headed out to the range to get it ready for jamboree, Jeff got a call from one of head honchos from the SD guards.. They wanted to know if we could set up and help them for just a couple more days.. We turned around and went back to help them, OUR town... 3 days after that we were mowing and prepping the grounds for the jamboree.. It was 4 days after that the flooding was getting worse and there were no hotels that were not on high ground and Jeff was NOT about to endanger anyone or bring them near a flooded central South Dakota! THAT is Jeff Rheborg! And as far as him looking in the mirror.. I'd like to see you stand face to face with me and say that! Jeff has done more for more people than YOU ever will.
"Owners and staff in the Bahamas" ... Not hardly..

Your pretty cool joining the site about 8 hours ago and instead of adding knowledge and camaraderie and trying to help people you go ahead and inflame things with your first post! Not cool at all. I was and had been a member of VHA since 1994 and eagerly renewed my membership every year. Last April I sent them a check for 2 year renewal for son and I and this happens. I don't appreciate sending someone money that I worked very hard for and not getting anything back. For an association to do this is wrong on every level. No notice, no announcement no nothing not even a KMA from them.

That's all well and good for you and the Rheborg's to help during the flood in 2011. I remember it and many kudos to you and all involved. That's true human spirit! But your human spirit is at a low with your first post! Try adding some knowledge and you'll gain many friends, but you started out on the wrong foot.

And I think it would be tough to find any Obama voters here on this forum. Proven fact that the majority of firearm owners are pretty conservative and work hard for their money and just want to see a return for our blood sweat and tears. Only way to put this to rest would be for Jeff to join the site and post on this thread and apologize. But I am pretty certain that would be very unlikely as he would hear it from a couple dozen members here. If he saw the writing on the wall 5 years ago about the poor finances then he should have been looking into some financial help or other avenues instead of just rolling up the carpet and leaving a couple thousand members hanging. If he did apologize then I'd take it with a grain of salt and call it good. Most of the members here were raised morally and the last thing anyone wants here is no return on our hard earned money!

Thanks for all your work on the sandbagging.

But if those folks were such "stand up" people, why no advance notice to all the members, and taking orders and subscriptions for several days after the place closed down via internet, and why are you speaking for him rather than him speaking for himself? The jamboree brought tens of THOUSANDS of dollars to Pierre, so why was there no jamboree in 2012 and 2013?? Lastly, I find your threats to 40xguy and or others to be in poor taste and speak volumes for your true character. You should be ashamed. WD

I cannot and do not speak for Jeff or VHA. I do not know all the circumstances.. NONE of you do.
What does a "life time membership" entail? YOUR lifetime or the lifetime of the organization? Think about it.

I worked on and off for Varmint Hunters for some time... A couple for Ned and Marc and quite a few for Jeff and Jackie, never full time. Only as needed. I was paid 1 time from them, never asked to be and never accepted anything after that. And yes. I bought my yearly memberships and had sent mine in shortly before I heard they were closing up. Ya it sucked.. Bad for me? Imagine what they had to go thru to decide locking up was better than not..
It did always seem to have some sort of turmoil. As anyone can understand, it is hard to find good honest help. Help that will not steal or try to cheat their boss somehow. If you don't get that, you have never owned your own business.
I'm sorry if some of you thought my first post was offending... If that is the case, most of you have never been properly offended.
And "threatening"?? Gimme a break... Go to Walmart and buy yourself some tougher feelings..

Let me try to explain this to you better.
So you are 19 and get a 69 SS Chevelle. It's awesome! It is fast, it is a really cool car, all your buddies really think you're cool and what not. But when you are 24 you get married. You still have your 69 Chevelle it's still really cool but it's loud, burns a lot of gas and always something rattling and loose clunky on it. Then you are 30 and your wife and you have a couple of kids, but you got your same old car. It is still really cool, really fast, doesn't get very good gas mileage, burns oil, the paint is fading and some of the chrome is getting pitted, you can't put a baby seat in the back of it very easily just kind of a pain in the ass. But all of your buddy's still think you're really cool you got a cool car you know your car doesn't meet your needs. So do you keep the same old 69 Chevelle? Upgrade it and put a V-6 in it? Something that gets a little better fuel mileage doesn't leak any oil isn't quite as fast, isn't quite as cool. You spruce it up. Give it a paint job make it look really cool. But it is still just the same old 69 Chevelle with no room in the back isn't very good on long trips, the kids are getting bigger, there is no room in the back. Everyone that sees you and your car thinks, "man that is a nice car.. I wish I had a car like that!!" It is cool. Does it function as the "perfect" vehicle for you? No.
At some point you have to draw the line and get rid of it rather than to keep dumping money into something that is bottomless, outdated and does not fit the need.

I hope that helps..
As far as the no notification thing... I don't know.. If I do ever find out I will let you all know..

How can you expect anyone to think anything but the worst when there was zero communication before or after they folded? I'm sure the owners have many fine qualities, but the lack of communication shows a great disregard for the subscribers that kept them in business for many years.

I don't think it's unreasonable for people to feel something shady was going on given the fact that VH continued to take payments even after the doors were locked and everyone associated sent packing. I'm sure there's a reasonable answer, or at least one most subscribers would accept, but we've had nothing but silence for nearly a year. Only rumors, letters from lawyers, and passionate defenses by people like you that know them personally.

Now, considering the legal proceedings they appear to be going through, they may very well have been advised by their lawyers not to say anything to anyone until it's all settled. Still, a simple statement expressing that would have gone a long, long way towards keeping the respect of their subscribers. Maybe that respect doesn't matter anymore.

You didn't explain it any better. Give it up, they took people's money for nothing. Stealing if you ask me.

Maybe just maybe if Jeff would have sent letters out explaining what happened it would have helped people better understand what really happened. Not even posting here and other blogs tells me someone was not being forthright.

Came home today to a letter in the mail from an "Attorney at Law" hate when I see that. Open it up and "Enclosed is your pro-rata distribution regarding Varmint Hunters Association" along with a ten dollar bill. I guess it was worth filling out the paperwork.

I didn't fill out any claim, so I guess I won't get $10. I really don't care. I am truly sorry that VHA folded, I enjoyed the magazine, and I believe they added to the varmint hunting community.
I don't know why they did not advise everyone of their demise, but I suspect it was because of legalities. I draw no conclusion as to the owners motives or morals.
I have started several small businesses, most currently one that makes steel shooting targets, and I can attest to the HUGE difficulties in funding a small business. Starting a business, and making it profitable and self sustaining is about the most difficult thing there is to do in the business world.
I am sorry VHA's effort was not successful.
