Varmint Hunter Magazine Memories

My memory of VHA: my PD shooting buddy discovered the organization and paid for a lifetime membership. Three magazines delivered and then the fat lady sang. Pretty short lifetime. Of course no refund. What a hose job.
I had a yearly subscription when they went under. Got the letter from the attorneys discouraging me from joining the bankruptcy settlement. No money, prolonged arbitration, etc, etc. blah blah. Heck yes I wanted in. A few months later I got a 10 dollar bill in the mail.

I went to the second International Varmint Hunters Convention in Spokane. It was in 1991. It was a real interesting affair, and I met a bunch of people in the shooting industry that participated and were very well known.

They were all approachable and quite engaging. At the banquet, I was sitting with Chet Brown, Chub Eastman and Bob Millek. They were all very talkative and we discussed the virtues of shooting varmints and shooting in general.

I used to see Chub at gun shows around the Northwest and it is sad to see how some of the old regulars in the shooting/writing industry have passed and all we have left are good memories. This was when the IVHA was in its infancy and struggling to gain a foothold in the print media.

Evidently Michael Comstock, the head of the IVHA wasn’t paying attention to business as he should and was booted before it collapsed and then became the Varmint Hunter Magazine.

I still have the issue after the convention where I did get recognition for attending and donating a guided hunt for the auction. I even have the first issue of the Varmint Hunters magazine in the plastic mailer laying around somewhere…

I'm sitting on the entire collection sans No.1 Issue. Now after pondering the matter, I intend to keep the entire set, as going back and reading those articles is both nostalgic and enjoyable, as the stuff in print out there now is a waste of time (to me). Plus paper to read, not a monitor.

The last article I wrote for them was in Issue No. 90, Spring 2014 titled "The Paradigm has Shifted: the 20VT".

The best attribute of the magazine IMO was articles written by guys "like us", regular guys who take our pastime a bit more serious than the average shooter, and enjoyed the smaller calibers, and the intended varmints of interest.

And I'll add that I truly miss Steve Timm too. He was a friend, fellow rat shooter and led me to my first 223AI, which I still consider one of the very best calibers for prairie dogs, not to mention his favorite elk caliber, the .338-06, which I also used for years (and still do) as the .338-06 Ackley (thanks Steve!). I now prefer smaller cased calibers for our ground squirrels such as the 221FB and the 20VT. I understand his choice for retirement, but I still miss reading his work.

I like the way things used to be.

I wrote Steve not long ago to get load data for the .250 AI. He wrote me back right away with all the info he had along with a copy of his article in Varmint Hunter. Rick…I agree with you….I like the way it use to be. My heart hurt when that mag left us.

Steve also got me into the .223 AI. I also thought it to be the perfect powder/bullet combo for PD sized critters. I’m now working with the 20 Tactical and I believe it to be another good balance of power and bullet caliber/weight. I can’t help myself. Dakota Predators in various varmint calibers are my rifles of choice. 6 BR, 6 PPC, 20 tactical and 20 Vartarg. Please help me. Are there any I’m missing?
