varget or H4350 6.5x47

I bought an 8lb jug of IMR4007SSC several years ago, and had tried (w/o much sucess) to find a good use for it in several different cartridges. The first three 6.5x47s I built all shot very well with a variety of powders with light bullets, and really well with RL17 & 130s or 140s.

But the fourth rifle I built in this chambering was a bit of a stinker, and didn't shoot particularly well with any of the powders I'd previously used. With nothing much to lose, I tried the 4007 with Hornady, Lapua, & Sierra 123s, and viola! - I'd found the powder that this picky bbl likes. It didn't like Varget, and it doesn't like N550, RL17, N150, or anything else I tried, so 4007's it for this bbl.

I shoot 40.8grs H4350 OVER 130GR VLD'S HUNTING W/450M PRIMERS THIS WILL SHOOT BUG HOLES.I'M ONLY SHOOTING 2750FPS.

I use h4350.
41.7 grains under a 130 JLK.

I am at 2925 FPS out of a 26 inch bartlein barrel and its a hammer. That is a pretty mild load in my rifle.

I have a couple buddies, with the same RBROS reamer, running 42.0-42.2 grains H4350. They are right at 3000 FPS with little pressure signs.

i have 2, 6.5x47 lapuas shot h4350, varget, re 15, but they both like imr 4064 38.5 gr with either the 120 sierras or the 123 scenars the best. shoots 3050 fps in both rifles. 28 inch tubes. h4350 41.0 grs good load too, 3000fps. if you try to go much faster the accuracy will suffer. stay under 3100 closer to 3000 and you'll find that this is the accuracy node. some like the the 130s and 140s but found that the 120 & 123 shoot better. 120s not that bad in the wind the extra speed makes up for wind drift. but to each his own i'll go with what is most accurate at the fastest speed it can handle. if a little slower, just elevate more lol.

Today I loaded 41 Gr RL17 and a 123 Sierra SMK, Average 2981, AD 3 and SD 4.2, Accuracy was not that good in comparison with 37 GR Varget, Average 2828 FPS, AD 5, SD 6.8, Shot 5 shot group 200 yards .67 inch or .3 moa, Rem 700, Shilen 26 inch 1/8 twist

Friend of mine shoots the 6.5x47 and I shoot a 260. He had trouble getting any accuracy with his using RL15 which he was told was the go to powder for the 6.5x47s. I put him on to H4350 and his groups really shrank down but he could never get the velocity that I did out of my 260.

I don't know if its barrels or what but some guys claim really high numbers for the 6.5x47s and others can come no where close to the claims without blowing primers. Just look at the posts on here and difference in the velocities. Is this something with the round itself?? Just curious?? Thanks guys!!

I have both 6.5L and 260. 260 is definitely faster but I cant get the 260 to match the 6.5L for accuracy, es/sd. 6.5L just seems easier to tune. Not night and day different but it is noticeable.

If you don't bush the firing pin hole it is easy to pierce primers. That said my 260 on a rem action craters primers something fierce with no other signs of pressure. I am thinking of having the 260 re chambered as 6.5L and bushing the fp hole.

I have a few rifles chambered in 6.5x47 and have shot this caliber for a couple years now. I started off with H4350, but couldn't ever get th velocity that everyone talks about (2,950-3,000) with the 130's. At 42.5gr of H4350 from a 25" Bartlein with the 130's I was only getting 2,890fps and this was a very hot load in MY rifle. Also, 42.5 was compressed and with only .002" neck tension and polished necks it was causing inconsistent seating depths (especially after the ammo had been trasnported to a match).

I switched over to Varget and found a good load at 37.5gr with the 130's. I'm still only able to get 2,875-2,880 with this, but it's not compressed and I don't have any issues with seating depth variances.

I have 4 rifles chambered in 6.5x47. A 22", 24", 25" & and 26" barrels and I've only been able to break 2,900fps with one of them using the 130's (without pressure signs).

Someone suggested that I try some 4007SSC and try jumping the 130's .030"-.040" and see what that would produce. Right now I'm .005" off the lands.

***To the above poster, what is your H380 load? I've never heard of anyone using that powder in the 6.5x47.

Trevor thanks for telling us you have 4 6.5L's. hoping that gives me the green light for number 3.

I'm getting an average of 2920 fps with 123smk'se. 27 7/8 brux. I could probably push it a little faster but I am enjoying long brass life. I'm still on my first 50 pieces with 1100 rounds down range. 22 times. This is the most accurate and easy to tune rifle I've had yet. Several Brux blanks should be at my house in a few weeks. I like the Brux. I like the 6.5 too!

What powder are you shooting? Thanks.

Great thread, should make it a sticky since there isn't much load data on the 6.5X47 page on the homepage.

My rifle likes 40.5gr H4350 and 37.5gr varget with the 140 hybrids. 20K off the lands. My ballistic calculator shows 2762 to match my 1000yrd dope with the 4350.
