6.5x47 140 HT IMR 4166

picked up a can 4166 this morning and started at 34 grs and worked up .4 at a time 2 rounds at a time and at 37.4 started touching and at 38.6 going through the same hole at 100 yards,,pressure starting to show a little on primers but no sticky bolt so I am gonna stop at 38.6 and shoot a couple 5 shot groups at 300 and if looks good will chronie and see what it will do,,

my groups with other powders start opening before I reach pressure and good velocity,,hoping to get good speed around 2850 and good groups,,

anybody tried anything other than RL15,Varget and H4350 with the 140 Hybirds??I can get accuracy but only with milder loads,,I cant reach the 2850 node with those powders without pressure,,


loading to 2.840 with .015 jump and 28.25 inch barrel

Try RE-17. You'll get higher velocities, but start low and work up.

maybe I need to try the 139 Scenar,I am having no luck with 140 Hybirds,,seems I get a wild shot ever 8-12 rounds,,

I've used RL17 in my 6.5x47s for 130 VLDs & 140 LRBTs. Run the 130s at 2920fps & the 140s at 2812fps out of a 30" Bartlein med Palma on a BAT 3L action in a McGee prone stock; scores with either bullet at 600 were about the same, but always seem to get higher X-count with the 130s. Shot the 130s @1000 during the Berger SW LR Nationals three years ago, and had excellent results with them.

Nowadays, I'm shooting more practical steel matches than HP, and am more concerned with temp sensitivity, since we get no sighters. Am building another 6.5x47 on a Bighorn TL2-SA in a Manners T4A stock, which will have a 26" bbl in rem varmint contour, and am going to experiment with IMR's new 4451 (may well be too slow in this small a case). Would sure like to know what velocities you're getting with the 140s out of 4166. I've got a good supply of Berger 140 LRBTs, and would really like to be able to use them in this new build, but if they don't work, I'll just go back to the 130 VLD.

If your barrel dosen't like the hybrid, try the 140 BT Long Range Target, #26409.
My last barrel loved them. 30" button, Avg 2920fps, 41+gr H4350, .005 jump

What kind of rifle are you shooting (parts list) and what area your pressure signs? Before I put in my .02, I was able to get rid of that flyer in mine.

last time out I shot 36 grs IMR 4166 and was getting good accuracy with no fliers but only 2740 fps,,if I can get another 150 fps without the fliers would be good,,

it shoots the 140 SMK with 40 grs H4350 at 2780 and pretty good accuracy,,the 140 Hybird and 36 grs IMR 4166 was 2740,,I got a little shiny spot on case at 38.8 and groups were starting to come back down but was afraid to go higher as I have seen ZERO load data on this round/powder,,it shot good at 800 yards with the 36 gr load at 2740,,

I tried the 139's and 140's in my 6.5x47, but just couldn't get anything to shoot as good as the 123 Scenars. I really wanted a heavier bullet, but the gun told me otherwise. Vihtavuori N-150 grouped the best.

I had another 6.5x47 a few years ago that never would perform with the loads that'd shot so well in my other two rifles in the same chambering (seemed really odd, since I chambered & fitted all three bbls using the same reamer myself). While my first two rifles just flat hammer with RL17 & Berger 130VLD & 140LRBT, this 'problem child' would only ever shoot to my expectations with IMR4007SSC & S123MKs. Don't recall now whether I ever tried 123 Scenars in it or not.

Then when I bought a DTA SRS chassis, decided to go with the 6.5x47 DTA bbl for it, and ran into the same issue, strangely enough, with the same solution. Soon as I could get Bartlein to contour a couple of blanks for the DTA and chambered them in 6x47 & 284, I listed the 6.5x47 bbl for sale on another forum. It sold at my asking price within about 15 seconds, and I've yet to hear any complaint back from the buyer. Sure hope this 'curse of the 6.5x47' doesn't rear its ugly head when I get the bbl finished for my Bighorn.

By your OAL it sounds like you are running a lot of free bore and should be able to get speed out of H-4350. My flyers went away with a stout load of 4350 seating a hybrid at the lands and increased neck tension. 28" Bartlein.

increase neck tension?? I am using a .288 nitrite bushing no turn chamber and I stopped at 41.5 grs H4350 but didnt have a chronie to clock those loads,,

you advise a .287 .286 ??

the 47L case hides pressure so well I just got nervous and stopped,,seemed like a stout load compared to 6.5 CM and 260 published loads,,

I will get a .286 and break the H4350 back out and work up .2 at a time until something sticks or groups tighten if you think it will work,,

I would LOVE to use the .618 BC bullets and would be happy with 3/4 inch 5 shot groups at 300 yards and 2875 fps,,if i will do that it should work well at the 800-1000 yard games we play,,nothing serious just friendly competition,,

I modified a case today and smoked several bullets and worked on the seating depth baseline for a couple hours,,I need a magnifying glass,,but from what I came up with his evening I believe my COAL with the 140 HT is just touching at 2.857 with 1,100 rounds fired,,mostly 123 Scenars and 39 grS RL15,

thanx for info and will give it a whirl,,,got a Shehane Tracker 1000 and 6MMBRDX Kreiger 8 twist barrel coming after the first oft the year,,hope to get this sorted out by then

the 47L case hides pressure so well , it will not fit in the shell holder first, then it is to hot, always check speed, over 31,000 fps is over psi
