USPS

Can't say that they don't rob Peter to pay Paul but the USPS is NOT intended to be subsidized by tax revenue.
Out of necessity, it will always be subsidized. It was never intended to be a for profit organization. The Post Office is a Public Service like the police, the fire and the street departments, except it is partially subsidized by the postage they charge for mailing a package. Most of us want 6 day a week service, whether we need it or not, and to send or receive a little or a lot of mail with standardized rates. Honestly, I don't know how any package can be sent across the country and delivered on a consistent basis of 2-3 day for less than $10.00, or even a letter for less than a $1.00 usually in 3-4 days.

Board of governors(usps) appointed by the president votes on the postmaster general stay/leave. The overtime/service changes, to improve solvency, has been an issue. Partially because legally the usps has to "prepay" the employee benefit system. This often results in a short fall in revenues. Obama care costs have NOT helped, fuel/energy not helping either. And electric vehicles will make this worse.

the 100% funding of retirement benefits was eliminated last year

I am sorry but that sounds a little nuts. What would be the advantage to the postal service to agree to terms where they lose money? Both FedX and UPS ship many things the same way. Hard to fathom any entity agreeing to do a job below costs.
They're a govt agency. Question answered. Next question. ;) Plus they can be bailed out if they begin to sink as they're "too big to fail". :/

When we moved to the country I was working so much I had no idea who delivered my mail. Later it was a nice lady that my wife and I knew from high school. She was great. We had a black mouthed cur that would put her paws up in the jeep and beg for a biscuit and she always gave her one and petted her. They moved her and when the now trained to beg for a biscuit cur dog tied it with the new guy , he went crazy threatening to kill her. I had to build a fence completely are around the property. To say i have a love hate relationship with my mail carrier is true just depends on who they send.

A lot of things have changed at my post office. I was still in diapers when I made my first trip there. Through the years, we saw the employees at the grocery store, church and just around town. As we got older, school mates started replacing those that retired. Fast forward to now, there is not a single face that I recognize except for when I have to go there. I would venture to guess that there is not one postal employee that lives in the zip code they service.
Checking the YELP rating on the service there, we are in the top 2 for the worst service in the area.

We live in the country, several miles outside the city limits. Until recently great mail delivery people. Average delivery time. Several weeks ago on a Saturday security camera showed new mercedes delivery postal van stop at the gate, young male driver gets out drops package next to gate post then leaves . Gate post is 300 yards from county road, house is another 250 yards from gate post.

Call the local post office Monday am. ask for postmaster, get some manager, ask if they now have a reduced postal rate. After asking me why I asked I explained that when I pay for mail to be delivered to an address that means my house address not some gate post. I also explained that the new Mercedes vans they are using are paid for by customers using the mail system and paying the ever increasing postal rates. The only thing they have to offer is customer service. Got very quiet on the other end of the line. She finally replied they would check into it.

New mail gal, delivers another package middle of that week, tells me the manager asks her how far off the road our house is, mail gal explains not far at all, no problem to make house delivery. She also tells me the manager is a new manager, does not know the system.

Other stories but that is enough.

I think, going from memory here, that they don't HAVE to go more than 1/4 mile from the road...fwiw. My driveway pushes that number but no problem so far. I do try to take care of my carriers and their employees when I can.

I'm actually surprised they have to go 1/4 mile. It takes time to go back into where some people are located and if they did it for everyone, they'd only get a few parcels delivered. In the Cities, they often have mail boxes clumped together even for residential neighborhoods.

Believe you are right about the distance from road to house. After I retired I met the mail lady that had our route. A real sweetheart, always took care of us. We always had some sweet treats waiting for her on the holidays. When she retired , met the new mail guy, he always took great care of us. Would drive to front of my shop, come in and visit. Aired up the tires on his old vehicle many times. He knew he was delivering gun parts to a lot of people on his route.

Definitely good to take care of those who do add customer service.!
