Maybe closer to breaking even. Lol! Everything gov't has a hand in, is or gets broken, of course. In that case, it is making a profit or breaking even, not losing money on the process.

Me too, great people who work hard serving our rural community.I love my post office. jd
Can't say that they don't rob Peter to pay Paul but the USPS is NOT intended to be subsidized by tax revenue.I like the post office, although my postmaster(can I say that), she didn't know taxpayers heavily subsidize the USPS.
Out of necessity, it will always be subsidized. It was never intended to be a for profit organization. The Post Office is a Public Service like the police, the fire and the street departments, except it is partially subsidized by the postage they charge for mailing a package. Most of us want 6 day a week service, whether we need it or not, and to send or receive a little or a lot of mail with standardized rates. Honestly, I don't know how any package can be sent across the country and delivered on a consistent basis of 2-3 day for less than $10.00, or even a letter for less than a $1.00 usually in 3-4 days. Can't say that they don't rob Peter to pay Paul but the USPS is NOT intended to be subsidized by tax revenue.
Sorry, I have to disagree. The president can fire other high-ranking executive officials at will, federal law bars the president from terminating the postmaster general under any circumstances. It is an appointed position and Louis DeJoy was appointed by Trump. Biden has chosen to keep him
I didn't know that. Interesting.Sorry, I have to disagree. The president can fire other high-ranking executive officials at will, federal law bars the president from terminating the postmaster general under any circumstances.
the 100% funding of retirement benefits was eliminated last yearBoard of governors(usps) appointed by the president votes on the postmaster general stay/leave. The overtime/service changes, to improve solvency, has been an issue. Partially because legally the usps has to "prepay" the employee benefit system. This often results in a short fall in revenues. Obama care costs have NOT helped, fuel/energy not helping either. And electric vehicles will make this worse.
They're a govt agency. Question answered. Next question.I am sorry but that sounds a little nuts. What would be the advantage to the postal service to agree to terms where they lose money? Both FedX and UPS ship many things the same way. Hard to fathom any entity agreeing to do a job below costs.
I think, going from memory here, that they don't HAVE to go more than 1/4 mile from the road...fwiw. My driveway pushes that number but no problem so far. I do try to take care of my carriers and their employees when I can.We live in the country, several miles outside the city limits. Until recently great mail delivery people. Average delivery time. Several weeks ago on a Saturday security camera showed new mercedes delivery postal van stop at the gate, young male driver gets out drops package next to gate post then leaves . Gate post is 300 yards from county road, house is another 250 yards from gate post.
Call the local post office Monday am. ask for postmaster, get some manager, ask if they now have a reduced postal rate. After asking me why I asked I explained that when I pay for mail to be delivered to an address that means my house address not some gate post. I also explained that the new Mercedes vans they are using are paid for by customers using the mail system and paying the ever increasing postal rates. The only thing they have to offer is customer service. Got very quiet on the other end of the line. She finally replied they would check into it.
New mail gal, delivers another package middle of that week, tells me the manager asks her how far off the road our house is, mail gal explains not far at all, no problem to make house delivery. She also tells me the manager is a new manager, does not know the system.
Other stories but that is enough.
I'm actually surprised they have to go 1/4 mile. It takes time to go back into where some people are located and if they did it for everyone, they'd only get a few parcels delivered. In the Cities, they often have mail boxes clumped together even for residential neighborhoods.I think, going from memory here, that they don't HAVE to go more than 1/4 mile from the road...fwiw. My driveway pushes that number but no problem so far. I do try to take care of my carriers and their employees when I can.
