USPS Money orders

carlsbad

Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.
I currently have over $1000 in USPS money orders in my wallet.

I went to the local USPS branch again yesterday and asked to cash them. The lady said maybe she had enough cash to cash the smallest one ($60) but she didn't. I asked when to come back when they would have cash and she didn't know. Suggested my bank.

My bank won't cash them. they say there are too many fakes out there. They will deposit them but hold the funds 14 days. This pretty much eliminates what most people are trying to accomplish of a cash transaction.

My bank will cash checks and hand me the money.

Anyone else have trouble cashing these?

Yea these days a USPS M O will require a visit to the bank in most cases. The post office hardly ever has any cash on hand to help out with cashing them.

never had a problem, but rarely have more than one and usually less than 300.00 but still do prefer checks, the bank will deposit the MOs but don't question the checks

I went to renew my Florida concealed carry permit, was told cash is not accepted. Went and got a MO and when I went back I looked around and understood. The PO and other government agencies hire people that they do not trust with cash.

This is one more reason why I like PayPal friends and family. No hassle. You have your money now.
I've heard with pay pal that if there's a dispute over the item and it's gun related you're on your own. I've thought about opening an account with them but haven't because of this. Does anyone have any experience with this? Pay pal seems like the way to go but this is hanging me up on it.

That is very odd, I have cashed USPS MO at banks I bank with and had no problems. ask to talk to a branch manager, the USPS MO have watermarks and a security strip. which can easily been seen.

if they can not tell if they are fake or real, at the time you present them to be cashed, time to find another bank.

yes my bank refused to cash a 150 buck USPS MO one day..I was at the Drive thru..I went inside quickly and they cashed it no questions asked..I was stompin mad and they never said a word..

I am banking at a branch in a grocery store. No manager on site...it would be a lot of trouble to find another bank since this one has my home loan. I've been pretty happy with them. Everything I do is free since I have the home loan with them.

I have been using USPS money orders a long time. A bank that you do business with that makes the claim you stated I would be moving to a new bank.

Call the PO and tell them in advance a day or so and they will have the funds. If not it is time to make phone calls.

PayPal, I won’t even comment, other than it is not if you get bit, but when.

Heck I fooled around with a guy that jus had to have a cashiers check, so I did. Then he pulled some crap on me that his bank had to hold it around 10-15 days to see if it was good. I went to my bank and visited to see what century it was when we quit having a wait to see if funds were available in two weeks. In a nut shell they told me a week day of normal business you should know in at the very most a matter of hours, not days.

Easy enough to verify the validity of the money order. The USPS provides a toll free phone number, (866) 459-7822 and follow the prompts, to verify the money order. I use this to check on a money order before mailing the item I have sold. I'd be having a sit down with the bank president and maybe moving on.

I'm not worried about any of them. They are from people that I would take a personal check from without hesitation. The bank teller won't call each of them in, however.

I would say you need to talk real politely and tell them there service is lacking. A branch should be have the ability to look at the USPS money order or even a cashiers check, run it through the system and see if it’s legitimate or not in short order. If they can’t they are not doing their job. And if you think the services are free, well sorry to say they are going to get it from you one way or the other.

My bank tried to charge me a processing fee a while back, didn’t amount to the price of a cheese burger at mcd’s. The bank I do business with owns the bank the check came from. A discussion came about and they dropped the silly fee.
I called the bank my buyer wrote the check through, I asked if I wrote a from my bank to his if there was a check cashing fee since the two banks are connected. I was assured there would not be one since they were sister companies.

I find a lot of some of this is some folks don’t want to do their job and some are not sure what exactly their job is.

Hope it works out well for you.
