Thanks jkohlerHoz53 a 700 long action would work great for a 284. It would mag feed fine
It would work fine. So would a short action. The .284 is a short action round, same OAL as a .308. Only problem might be with the wider case body may give some trouble with feed lips, release points, and follower designed for the .308 or 30-06. If you are making a single shot, none of that matters.
I agree about the bullet choices. The 308 is 2.015 case length and the 284 is 2.170. A long action would allow you a better choice with the longer bullets.
Just depends on what you want it for. Sounds like he has a long action to start with. I own both and both have their own specific use. My hunting 284 is a SA and built for 160-168s. The LA is designed for 180-195s for big winds at 1000 plus. Two guns for two different purposes. I really like the SA in a hunting rig. Short bolt throw, less recoil, quick handling and I can use the loads in my Winchester M100 if I want( 160 nosler partitions). It's all a matter of preference.284 case is best on a long action, learned this the hard way!
Thanks fellas for the info.I agree about the bullet choices.
SAMMI COAL for both .284 Win and .308 Win is 2.800. The 284 was originally developed to use in the Winchester 88 and 100 rifles to get .270 like performance in those guns.
I have both but I was thinking of using a 270 I have after I wear out the factory barrel with 90gr Sierra HPs like you recommended to me6 oz diff between a long and short action, not to mention that you can not chase the lands with a short action at all. When bullet jump starts to have an effect on accuracy, you are screwed with a short action, and may have to open the ejection port to get a loaded round out...been there....done that.
A guy that only shoots 10 rounds a year with a short action will be ok, but God help you if you want to shoot a berger, Nosler, hornady VLD bullet to begin with...you are stuck in what ever best that you can get. This has been beat to death over the years, if you like a short action, then OAL in relation to distance to the lands to achieve best accuracy is meaningless. You have to settle for best you can get.
Those with ears, let them hear.......

Thanks for the info about the extractor. I'll watch for the differance in case rims.Mine works fine as a single feed. Depending on what type of brass you use you may have trouble with the extractor. E
I am running a 6.5x284 in a Rem la with a 308 bolt face and have never had an extraction problem. It works flawlessly.Be sure to use long action, especially if you intend on shooting the vld's.Thanks for the info about the extractor. I'll watch for the differance in case rims.

Yep I had to learn that the hard way myself.284 case is best on a long action, learned this the hard way!
I'm just starting my load development on the new SA 284 build. I will pass on my results. I would not build a 284 win on a short action if I were looking for the best velocities or extreme accuracy. I have one that gives me that on a long action platform. This SA is a woods gun and I do not expect the same results. I do however understand your point on fine tuning the SA and it's difficulties. If I were only building one 284, it would certainly be on the long action.6 oz diff between a long and short action, not to mention that you can not chase the lands with a short action at all.
