URBANRIFLEMAN 22-250 Ackley

I got the blank contoured today. :)

Did you do a seating depth test?
No......
Parked them .030" off jam for now. I'm going to shoot varmints there. If I get froggy, I'll mess with it. With an SD of 6.....I'm in a good spot. Slow at 3250, but that is a function of the powder im using.

Those three groups were just a powder charge test and see velocities. It's such an easy shooter and plenty accurate as is for my use. I'll burn the barrel up on varmints rather than anymore testing at this point. Too many irons in the fire and too many varmint rifles to get ready.

Thanks for the great work!

I did my load tests with that bullet at 20 jam and it shot well. I have yet to do the seating depth either.

Seems to be a pretty easy bullet to shoot. I shoot the 75 ELD in 223 and 22-250. I have found in both that .020"-.040" gave me the best results in those past experiences. I'm .030" off a HARD jam, so probably .015-.020 off touch in this Ackley.

Being a varmint hunter mainly, I don't want Jam in case I have to extract the round while in the field........so I never test bullets jammed.

My load with staball 6.5 in Lapua brass with 75gr bullets in a my Bergara 22-250 1/9 Twist is 38.5gr
I chronied 39.5, 40.0, 40.5, 41.0gr of Staball in Formed cases with this Ackley.

I realize I could get more speed with another powder, but don't care, and don't want to push brass hard anyway.

According to the chrony, I "found pressure" at 41.0gr
Even though of course the cases showed no pressure "signs".........Ackley's have a good way of "hiding pressure" anyway, so a chrony during load development is of value.

Chrony numbers......75 ELDm, Formed Lapua, Fed 210match, .030" off hard jam 38 degree weather, Staball 6.5 powder.
39.5gr=3193 fps
40.0gr=3232 fps
40.5gr=3271 fps

41.0gr=3363 fps

I gained exactly 39 FPS between 39.5-40
Also gained exactly 39 FPS between 40.0-40.5gr

However, when going from 40.5-41.0gr I gained exactly 92 FPS............(Pressure)

I loaded up the rest of the 86 once fire formed cases I had left at 40.0gr (because all 3 loads shot well). When I shoot these at varmints it will be 60 ish degrees.

I've shot Staball 6.5 for a year now in 6.5 Creed with 136 to 147gr and 22-250 with 70-75gr and it's atleast 100 FPS slower than Hodgdons load data claims.

It does however meter beautifully through the Uniflow...............Also, I have found the accuracy to be exceptional.

I'll take 100 FPS slower and "somewhat" Temp stable ball powder (the best i've tested with only 30 FPS spread from 30degree to 80degrees, over hand weighing charges any day.

This barrel is stupid accurate. If I can shoot three groups at 100 yards in 38 degree weather with 2 MPH variable crosswind that are all below .3" with ZERO seating depth tweaking, it's a true Gem.

I'll probably spend more time with it...................just to show it'll stack 5 in one hole.

Just not now, just not right before varmint season, just not in 30degree weather.

In any event, your barrels are SMOKERS

What do you do when daylight savings time messes with your sleep schedule?

Order another barrel from Brad at the urbanrifleman.

Just placed an order for a 1/8twist 223 Ackley 26" Heavy bull 1.080" Savage Prefit for my other ARC Nucleus 2.0.

It seems your barrels can't shoot a bad group. I got some screamers in formed brass so far with my first attempt with 75 eld match in that 250 Ackley.

I think you could probably shoot anything sub 1/2 minute in this barrel.

Thanks again Brad. The varmints are calling here and I'm happy I'll have identical rifles setup with Urbanrifleman Ackley's.

Chucks and squeeks lookout!!!

Your 223 Ackley barrel looks like a beauty. I think it will be a hummer. I hope!!

Ships in the morning. :)

223 Ackley Barrel arrived today. Spun it on another Nucleus 2.0. KRG Bravo, Trigger Tech Flat Blade, Burris XTR 3 5.5-30x56 scope in Seekins rings.

IDENTICAL Rifle to my 22-250 Ackley.........sans different colors on the stock.

It was a teribble day, but shot 60 rounds of Factory Lapua 55gr FMJ ammo.

I set the headspace for a crush fit (without trigger installed on action) for this factory ammo. I have 500 of all the same lot # that somebody on this forum gave me a heck of a deal on a while back. I got this ammo for the price of Virgin Lapua brass, so it seemed a no brainer to me as I had a 223 Ackley IMP in mind.

It's going to be a shooter. Wind was switchy.........5mph to 15mph

Here are a few pics of how it shot between wind inconsistencies.

It's gonna be a shooter. GREAT JOB BRAD!!

I bought 1000 of that Lapua fmj back in the day and still shooting the brass.i shoots about 1 moa typically.

Pull the bullet out and stick a Berger 52 in it... Then it will shoot .1s. lots of fun. :)

I did a thread on it called Lapua 223 Mexican match.

If I were going to do builds, that is the action I would use. I think they are smooth as glass and they really shoot. Not to mention Savage tenon compatible. Best action for the price out there, I think.

No brainer. Ted's got a smart design with the Nuke. 2.0

Also, his black friday sale @ $750 per action, made the choice an easy one. Three lug, changeable bolt head, "controlled feed", big @ss claw extractor, Rem 700 footprint, Savage Small Shank Tenon. Great features for $750 on an action made in WA, USA.

I'll have to stuff some 50gr Speer TNT's in this ammo, I've got plenty of those. I don't know if you've shot the little TNT from Speer, but it'll nearly hang with Berger.

If the 55FMJ Lapua shoots 1 MOA typically, which I believe. Looks like it'll consistently be around 1/2" for me with your barrel and my setup. Of course, things "change" when your fireforming. I've never shot the .223 Lapua ammo in a standard 223. Yesterday was my first time ever shooting it.

Well, I've decided to pull the 55 gr FMJ and stuff a Speer Varmint 52gr HP in there instead of the TNT.

I've only got 1,000 TNT left and have 7,000 52gr Speer HP.

I have an incredible load of 26.0 gr H335 with that 52gr Speer. Works in almost any rifle to give nice little bugholes.

So far this morning, I got 140 rounds "remanufactured" with the new bullets. I need to take a break. Going to get all of my 500 round lot switched over eventually.

I'll update at some point how this barrel shoots with the Speer. I suspect "good things".

THANK YOU SO MUCH

These will now work much better on varmints this spring while fireforming to Ackley.
P.S.
Virgin Lapua .223 Brass has so much neck tension, I didn't even have to bushing size the necks after pulling. Seating feels consistent with still .002-.003" neck tension when seating a fresh 52gr Speer HP.

MY favorite Varmint bullet in my 223 Ackley in my 12 twist is the 50 grain TNT. For the price I haven't shot anything that's any better. I think you're going to find that your Mexican match that you made up we'll shoot probably a lot better than you expect. That's pretty funny that's how I pulled the bullets too because you couldn't use a bullet puller so I just used a pair of pliers and my rock chucker pulled them out and as you said there's just enough neck tension to seat the bullet but man they really shoot just like that I tried to improve the formula by taking the powder out and resizing the neck and they didn't shoot any better. Man if I had 10,000 rounds of that Lapua 223 FMJ I would be a happy man

May I suggest that you run the case up through a large washer when pulling the bullets with vise grips or Pliars. If the pliars contact the crest of the threads, eventually the threads in your press will need chasing with a tap....learned this the hard way....duhhh....

Thanks for the suggestion. The angle of the jaws on my vice grips, perfectly rest on and match the "bevel" that is recessed (above the threading) on my Old School RCBS JR3.
So, in my case, no worry for thread damage.

Threw together a 60gr Sierra TMK load today in formed brass...... .O20" off Jam
27.5 and 28.0 gr of Ramshot TAC puts 5 in a ragged hole.
Settled on 28.0gr
3400 FPS with an SD of 9 for 5 shots.
.231" group
Nice barrel....I've got 160 rounds threw it now.
