Turning To Air Guns

Dusty,
I stand corrected, I haven't been in airguns for a long time, mostly High Power Varmint Silhouette and BPCR Silhouette ( very addicting ), until everybody became too old or died. Thanks for making me feel 100 years old!
John
These new barrels and heavy pellets along with the extreme power has changed the game

Might be the time to start another category on the forums just for air guns.
I see the air gun matches really taking off.
Look at the payouts and you’ll understand.
Must of us shoot for fun but shooting for big prize money is a nice bonus.

Id love to get into field target. Cant find much info on matches around me

Is anyone getting feed up with ammo and component shortages and prices and turning to air guns?

I see more air guns each time I visit my local range and the participation in the air gun matches is growing by leaps and bounds.
Air rifle shooting is an olympic sport and kids can get college scholarships to schools with teams. All of the Service academies have air gun shooting, too. So, i think of it as just another shooting discipline and not really like giving up on other types of shooting. 60 shots standing at 10 meters does not sound so bad but the 10 is a period sized dot like at the end of the sentence....yep, that's all. it is quite a challenge. Simple targets come with 2 sighters and 10 bulls for record. Firing one shot per bull. It is a sport where 14 year old girls regularly outshoot seasoned High Masters at our club. ( I am speaking from experience...and NO i am not a 14 year old girl, LOL)
"Precision Shooting" magazine had a great article years ago regarding a comparison of the .22LR Anschutz and an air Rifle. they clamped both in vices and shot at targets while they indexed the windage. the impacts on the .22LR was a little erratic while the air rifle impacts were perfect on elevation and indexed the same amount laterally and it was an awesome article.

Great sport to get kids involved in but the 10 meter game is only one small part of airgunning. There is benchrest, field target, handgun, quite a few areas to become involved in. There is a running target game. It seems bigger on the west coast and southern states than here in the NE but I think it's starting to grow and will, do to ammo and components. For the price of getting one custom barrel bought chambered, and installed you can be in the game.

Crosman .177 Nitro piston

It's a daily Feral pigeon slaughter at my neighborhood.
I've got a Crosman .177 Nitro Piston too, but it doesn't shoot worth a dang. What kind of scope do you have on yours, and have you had any accuracy issues with it?

sort of relevant here.... I have a 20 cal. Beeman R7, very nice, never abused. I never had a problem shooting 20 cal pellets. today I happened to get it out. the pellets would not feed into the barrel. these were high quality pellets and previously they worked fine in this rifle. I will scrounge around and look for some other 20 cal pellets to try. Any input is appreciated. I tried to push it into the breach? w fingernail, to no avail!! I guess some squirrels lived another day, or longer.

FWIW, I have a Beeman r7 20 cal. Very accurate with the rekord trigger. The best accurate pellet in mine was the Beeman Silver Sting (which are really hard to find these days). Next would be the JSB 13.73 gr pellets which are still available. best of luck. 7315br

Just for general information for those interested in getting involved in the Springer game. Two rifles I recommend with triggers easily adjusted to under 4 oz. These are both underlever rifles so they have fixed barrels which help accuracy. The Air Arms TX200, English made, or the Weirauch 97 made in Germany. Once you learn how to shoot them they will shoot dime size groups and under at 25 yards shooting off traditional front and rear rests just like a regular powder burner. 700.00 or so to a bit over 800.00. I recommend .177 if your mostly shooting indoors or under 50 yards. .22 does much better outdoors in a breeze. No cleaning or reloading. .035 a shot with good pellets. No tanks, hoses, compressors needed.

gosh. you all sound very knowledgeable about this subject. i know nothing about air guns. i do have a b.b. rifle and pistol though. don't know if they are the same thing as what you all are discussing. mine are all 4.3 mm calibre and copper plated. everytime i go to a shop to buy factory ammo i get sticker shock. lol.

I think most of what's being discussed go pretty far beyond BB Guns. These rifles shoot precision pellets designed for high performance. Many of them have high powered springs or are of the Precharged Pneumatic variety. That means they fill their air reservoirs from a pump or SCUBA tank and are capable of power nearing that of rimfires.

Speaking of, I killed another groundhogs this weekend past with the Diana 54. One shot to the bean and down for the count. Number 4 with it.
