Trued Rem 700 vs Custom Actions

Right, I spoke with a member here about reworking my Remington he turned it down as it wasnt a custom action.
Made me think ....
"What is my money not green enough for you?"
And now to hear that they have to rework or adjust a custom, that pretty much gets us down to resale value.
If you sell guns that is.

Not exactly the same case, but I had a similar interaction with a riflesmith...
I asked John King of Kila, MT to chamber a barrel and build a custom seating die for me a handful of years ago. He was reluctant to do it and towards the end of the conversation when he knew what I wanted, he said "Well I dont think you can afford my work".

That struck a bad nerve with me. So I told him, "Well after that comment, you will never find out". I hung up on him without saying goodbye and never spoke to him again.

I bet my salary is well in excess of 3 or 4 times what he pulls in each year, but I'm not gonna argue with folks that act like that and I have nothing to prove to them. They simply wont get my business.

I think most gunsmiths and shooters being honest and not trying to justify why they paid 1200.00 for a custom action would say that a trued blueprinted Remington action will shoot right next to most customs. In most cases that is. Barrel, bedding, trigger being the 3 most important aspects of a system. I know Alex mentioned that an action is alot more important and it's hard to argue with knowledge but it's just my opinion based on my experience using factory vs custom. Sure more money will be spent in many cases making a factory as nice as a custom BUT it will still have Remington etched on it's side. For that reason alone, many shooters will get a custom rather than rework a Remington.

I don’t think anyone is arguing the fact that a custom action can be more expensive than a true rem 700 or that they are more precise is most cases.

We also have to think that for some people just buying a custom action isn’t an option for financial reasons and may be easier to pay a little at a time to upgrade their factory action.

There is also no guarantee that your custom action will shoot better than your trued rem, sure are the odds better, yes. There are many variables to consider and it’s nice our sport has different avenues to get to the same goal.

It still brings us back to the original question, with as many variables removed as possible, how much better does a custom shoot? I agree it may be an question that may not have an answer. We rely on knowing most customs have tighter/truer tolerances for some of that answer. While not factoring in how a custom action/bolt combo operates, which is almost always better.

I love this debate. I find it very interesting. If I had the money up front I myself would have bought a custom. But my rig is now a trued rem action from a factory Vssf 2 .204. My brother and dad bought were able to build a complete rig from Kelblys. All I know is all our guns are shooting 1/4 moa at 100 while doing our testing.

Almost none isn't NONE.

Absolutely. The winning margin in competitive benchrest is frequently a few thousandths of an inch in aggregate. You can't leave anything on the table. For other shooting disciplines and for hunting, those few thousandths may not matter.

Dwight Scott did a brisk business fixing the ignition on brand-new BATs. Jim Borden sells his brand-new actions with timed triggers. Custom actions (even from the same maker) are not all created equal, and they are definitely not necessarily plug-and-play in the competitive benchrest game.

I didn't take it as though he did something wrong in that case. We all have opinions. When I list an item, I'm done with it and I price to move it. I have more of a problem when I get jewed on, I've checked prices, my crap is well below that.

I can attest to that. You priced that Mausingfield action at a "come steal this from me" price. The fact that I already had one plus another build in the works kept me from snatching it up, but damn it took all the self control I had not to do it anyway

Im sure this is some kind of insult, but it's so random and out of context I'm not sure what it is... o_O
No pun intended. Just stating different strokes for different folks. Some like stock 700’s, blueprinted 700’s, Borden’s, Bat, etc...whatever it is.... just like some like barrels with nuts. I probably can’t shoot the difference anyways. I’ll be the first to admit it. One of my best shooting rifles is a new 700 action straight out the box that I took apart, screwed on a Shilen and put into a McMillan stock. I do feel that for most people a 700 action should just be left alone (unless something is obviously out of whack). The blueprinted 700’s I had were a complete waste of money. Never again

The Buds 40x is gtg out of the box.

Add a Craddock Precision Bartlein barrel that you install yourself, a Jewel, and Revolution stock with aluminum bedding block and I think it would be hard to beat for three times the money.

Yes, and here is where I say that if we are talking about "extensive mods" or "basic truing".

To say that pinning the lug, adding a bolt stop, threading the bolt, or sleeving the action are "basic" to get the action up to speed is not really fair to a Remington action. You really don't need any of those things. My buddy Terry is on here and he just built a new rifle from the Budsgun's 40x SS single shot and is simply BADDASS and he didn't touch a thing (it's bone stock). He even made the stock himslef out of an old 40x military stock. It is already shooting under .25 moa a lot, and that is with a CBI nut barrel off the shelf.

i have a brand new in the box Buds SS 40x action sitting here and it looks darn good for the money. I'm almost 71 and my hands shake horribly, a custom would be a waste on me.

Urban, sure would appreciate a pm from your buddy Terry. Maybe you could tip him off - Thanks.

A percentage scale 0 to 100%, how much does a good custom action contribute to accuracy?

Most of us know the barrel, the chamber, the gunsmithing/machinest skills, the shooter, the wind reading skill, the quality of bedding, the hand loads, the tighter tolerances, the smoothness, yada yada yada, list of other factors goes on and on.... all things even, at what point does a custom action play a part in precision? Maybe chambering the round more concentric to the chamber? Tighter lugs lock up?

Lots of emphasis gets put on actions, however in depth thinking, I personally conclude an action plays a very small part in overall precision/accuracy. My guess 1% or less. For example, I have a trued rem 700 6BR where I believe I could never shoot the difference if it was a custom action and all else equal.

To take this further, cutting out some factors, a rail gun, all things equal, trued 700 vs a bat lets say... is there any statistical data to prove the bat action would be more accurate on target everything else equal? If so, What are the factors that give the bat actioned rig the advantage on target?

At the end of the day we all know for the price of a stainless 700 plus price of truing, you may as well spend $100 more and get a entry level custom action... however this is besides the point. We often see questions as to what action should I get, and a big emphasis is towards accuracy, not strength, mechanics, safety, lock up, etc for the desired cartridge.

Just a good debatable, in depth question to discuss vs the boring threads that wont go away...

I am having 2 builds being done. One is with a custom because I didn’t have the SA mag bolt face needed. The other I have a Remington 700 LA Mag bolt face that is needed. $280 for trueing, pin work, m18. It’s just finances with me. I wouldn’t buy a new Remington to be trued. *Acknowelgement: i’m Just a layman knowing there are real experts on this board.
