Top target ammo?

I am returning to target shooting after a 30 year hiatus and was wondering if Tenex and R-50 still occupy the top of the heap? BTW: I paid about $5 per box back then. What say you?

Welcome back, ahh yes, the prices of yesteryear. :) I'm rather new to LR shooting, 10-12 years now. I don't know anything about the items that you referenced to, but sure others around here do and will chime in.

My Lapua Polar Bialthlon cost almost $20 a box.$187 plus shipping per brick. I offered a brick here for $185 and got no takers. Oh well next years run will probably be $22. Tom

I would say whatever works in your gun, as some may be better than others. Eley - Tenex, Lapua Midas, Wolf Ultra Match, the previously mentioned Polar Biathalon. Try a couple, then buy a lot or a case of it, if you can.

I happen to get lucky an Wolt Match Target does really well for me in the one .22 I am competetively shooting. It is supposed to be a step down from Ultra Match, but it does ok for me.

Good luck.

Tenex
Top of Line Lapua
Top of Line RWS

$20+/box of 50

Only your rifle will tell you its preference. There is going to be a difference between each of them depending on your rifle.
I WOULD refer you to testing that was done here.

Every gun will like what it likes. Every lot number will shoot differently, some great, some will make you pull out your hair wondering what happened. Usually the higher end of Eley and Laupa will shoot better than their lower price lines. Get some of each, and see what it likes.

My club's rimfire br matches are shot at 200 yards; the little bit of extra velocity provided by RWS R100, plus R50-level uniformity, makes it pretty much the universal choice.

Some excellent suggestions for ammo made. I've tried most of them in my target 22 rifle. However, strange as it may seem, for me the Norma TAC ammo has shot just as well, sometimes a lot better, than much more costly and better known/regarded brands of match 22 ammo in my rifle.

Huffmanite,
We shoot at 100 yds. at our clubs. Noticed quite a few shooters switching from Eley black box and Lapua 10X to Norma ammo. Getting better groups at a lot less cost. 'Course all that success will naturally raise the price of Norma. Not sure if this is a new grade of Norma or if it's just getting better. Anyway it might be a good time to stock up. And hope for windless days.
Dan R.

Ross308, lots of nice comments about the Norma TAC over at Rimfire Central website. One gent there posted about a reply from Norma USA after an inquiry as to who made the TAC. Here is the reply. "Norma and RWS are all part of Ruag-Ammotec and Norma has contracted RWS to build Norma branded 22 ammunition to Norma Specs."

been shooting 100 yard benchrest smallbore for score with aperture sights,,

I agree with everything said about the top line ammo. But in one of those unexplainable situations, my Cooper LVT recently shot better groups with lowly Eley Club than with any of the higher $ ammo. I was thrilled of course but realize this is not the norm. Moral of the story: don't overlook anything if you're not finding satisfactory results from better ammo.

My findings so far have shown that consistency is the issue in performance of course. The "cheaper" brands have shown me the larger amount of fliers through in-consistency in manufacturing. Of course there are exceptions. I like the Norma Tac 22 so far. Not too expensive yet, and still fairly reliable on consistency so far. YES, I do have the occasional flipper, but no where near the other similar priced stuff. My rifles love Tenex and RWS 100/50. But my wallet doesn't, and the Norma is keeping up at my level for now. 2 cents worth.

Only shooting at 50 yards but Eley Match and Lapua Center X is very accurate in my Anschutz 1907. I give the edge to Center X. I buy Center X from Champions choice for 9.75 box. The Eley I get from Killoughs in Texas for 14.80 box.
