low(er) cost 10/22 barrel

Looking to maybe replace my Walter Lothar barrel on my 10/22. Not with a very expensive one at that. I've narrowed it to:
1) E R Shaw: +/- $140.00. Stainless
2) Feddersen: +/- $160.00. Blued. 30-day return warranty.
3) Green Mountain: +/_ $200.00. Stainless
4) Beyer: +/_ $170.00. Anodized aluminum w/liner.

Shooting now .600" 5-shot groups @ 50 yards with Eley Benchrest Precision ammo. Eley TenEx and Match were no better.

FWIW, the present barrel is 21 years old.

Opinions/experiences?

I have GM 24” .920 SS barrel on a parts built 10/22. It shoots pretty darn well, just don’t put your bore scope in it. Mine has machine marks from end to end.

I can say Green Mountains shoot really good for the money... I've shot 15-20 of them
Yup,. THIS ^^^ Bentz Chamber and a Sweet, Stainless steel Barrel at, a very, Reasonable Price !
I'd Buy another, any Day, as Mine group's, in the 3's- 4's at 50 Yds with, Mid Priced, SK Standard plus, Pistol Match and Wolf Match "Extra" and gets me, 1/2 to 5/8th's, inch group's with, CCI Mini Mag & Winchester, H-P,..
Hunting, Ammo ! I polished the Bore and Chamber with JB's LIGHTLY and Broke bbl., in,. "Carefully".
The Chamber, was Sharp and "Held" , Live Ammo from, "extraction", so a Little JB's on a patch, over a Bronze Brush,.. Fixed that, issue, easily ! I made, an 85 yard shot ,on a Sage Rat with, Win H-P's ( Rifle, rested over, a lge Rock ).
My Rifle has, a 20 " SS, "Sporter" sized Barrel, a 2.25 pound, Volquartzen Trigger and a 4.5 x 14 Power "Gridded",.. Scope.

Lothar Walther makes barrels for Kidd, which is considered among the top 10/22 clones for accuracy. Of course, if you want to change it, that's fine, but I would try and work with the existing barrel. You may have a carbon ring in the chamber affecting accuracy, so a good cleaning might make a big difference. You may also need to re-crown the barrel if it has been damaged in cleaning or use. All rimfires are different when it comes to ammo. I would test as many ammo brands as you can. One last point, the lack of accuracy might be caused by something other than the barrel. You may want to look into a better stock or bedding the one you have. If you do decide to replace the barrel, I can recommend the Fedderson barrels highly and they are reasonably priced.

I like this advice.... I love to make factory guns using factory parts shoot good... I have a bone stock 10/22 that was made in the 90s and was my father's that has shot a 6/10 of an inch group at 100 with ELEY outlaw benchrest ammo... Using a cheap vortex scope.... Don't get me wrong there's been guns I have just given up on... If you spend enough time you can usually find what's causing problems and not just throw away and rebuild 90 % of the gun... To me that's half the fun...

I have a AR I have been working on for awhile and it just won't shoot.... After shooting it yesterday with just iron sights I realized there's something up when you mount an optic on it because it shot way better with irons... Maybe the mount... It will end up with a red dot and will be a spare knock around gun I am moving on to a rifle I built and the lvpo and mount showed up today , now to play with that one for awhile...

I think I'll start by removing the present barrel and taking a good look at the chamber end.
I'm pretty sure by now the problem is the nut behind the gun, But with the Feddersen 30 day return warranty I just might give it a try.
It seems one can't go wrong with a Feddersen.

Thanks for all the replies.

the biggerst fault of the 10/22 is, it only has a single stock/action screw. Tape bed the action to the stock, so it has a TIGHT fit. I did this, and I have to pry my action out of the stock. Accuracy much improved. Clean chamber with C4 (let it soak for awhile). Try SK ammo. Good luck.

Little Crow Gunworks makes, a "Recoil Lug" for, the 10-22 Rifle,. but they are, a Bit tricky to "Glass Bed",,.
IF you to want, easy removal of action for, Cleaning. A GLASS Bedded Action, Recoil Lug, a Green Mtn Barrel and some SK or Wolf ammo, makes for, GOOD,.. Accuracy ! ( Sub 1/2 inch group's at, 50 yds, IS, very, doable ! )

I agree. I did this on an old 10/22 carbine from the early 60s and the groups shrunk by half! Make sure you use aluminum foil tape!

I have 2 ER Shaw barrels and 1 Green Mountain. I am very satisfied with both Shaw barrels. I am still working with the Green Mountain. I am having trouble with the action and I think the headspace between the bolt and the barrel is too deep. I am sure it will be as good as the Shaw (maybe better) when I get the kinks worked out. All barrels are in a 10/22.

Inertia and lazynes won out. I'm leaving well enough alone. I've gotten to consistently group just under .500" for the Eley ammo and .620" or so with cheap Federal Auto-Match, so I'm leaving it alone.

I'll just shoot more of the cheap stuff!

But I'll keep the Feddersen in the back of my mind.
