Learned Some Things About My Eyes Yesterday

I learned something very important for me to keep in mind in the future. When I started testing .22 Rimfire Ammo I did not test in any special order. When I posted tests with the Tenex, I did not take into consideration which I shot first and last. I did not think it matter, but then decided that maybe eye fatigue caused some of the variation, so yesterday I shot batches of the same ammo from the same lot numbers, but I shot the Tenex first, followed by the Midas Lapua and then the Eley Target. This target shows sighters on the bottom (5 shots) and then 10 shot groups above. Far right Tenex, Middle Lapua Midas and left Eley Target, which had shot the best (but was shot first) on my last test. This was also outside with 5+ MPH wind.

So now I take into consideration eye fatigue and I am shooting with a patch on my left eye as I am left eye dominant, but have to shoot a rifle right handed (I shoot shoguns with both eyes open and handguns left handed) because I have a pacemaker embedded in my left shoulder.

Thanks for the post of self discovery on eye fatigue ...I shoot ARA in AZ very bright light and UV & by the 4th card my eyes are fatigued that's when generally the lowest score shows up.
As a "senior" shooter with health concerns I am having to be aware and adjust and tweak the way I shoot for my body limitations just as much as tweaking for the ammo differentials...Ha...but I am thankful for each day behind the trigger....
I hope you have many fine days at the range to play..and BTW very nice shooting!!!

There's enough variables in reloading... I hate getting old, but we gotta adapt.:(
Sure is something to keep in mind. Good post.

At least I have finally taken up Benchrest shooting this late in life as it is easier to shoot sitting down then some of the other shooting sports I have been into.

My best cards, whether clean or fouled barrel, whether a .22lr or a larger caliber, are ALWAYS on the first two cards I shoot at. Getting old really sucks but is infinitely better than the alternative.

i am intrigued by your comment about the pacemaker. You shoot handguns left handed because you have a pacemaker in the left side of your body? Or am I reading to much into what was written.

Try polarized lenses in your shooting glasses / eye-pro. It's amazing how much of the strain it relieves over a bright sunny day on the range, keeping your eyes from getting 'fried'. I also try to use my weak-side (non-aiming) eye on the spotting scope (which pulls in a lot of light) and thus 'save' my strong-side / aiming eye for looking thru the rifle scope.

Chuck, Nope, I shoot hand guns left handed because I am left eye dominant, but can not shot rifles or shotguns left handed because of the pacemaker embedded in my left shoulder.

Read it this way: "So now I take into consideration eye fatigue and I am shooting with a patch on my left eye as I am left eye dominant, but have to shoot a rifle right handed because I have a pacemaker embedded in my left shoulder".

Shoot Handguns left handed is in ( ) so separated from the balance of the sentence.

70 here, I have floaters in both eyes, and mostly blocked tear ducts.. Stygmatism starting too.. Sometimes I struggle to get a shot off. It's a bitch gettin old..

For a little help, there are adapters made that allow an I-Phone (and others) to be mated/attached to your spotting scope. They attach to the eyepiece and the phone snaps into the adapter. This provides the screen of your phone for viewing through your spotting scope. No need to lean over the spotting scope eyepiece, just glance at the screen. Search for phone camera adapters and you should find a lot to look at.
