TM Solution

I tried TM Solution, and although it worked relatively well for powder fouling, I didn't have much success removing copper. I've had to follow up with Sweets to remove the copper after using TM in my Tikka 223.

Are there any special techniques required to have success removing copper with TM? I've tried extending the soak period to as long as overnight, and I tried using brass and nylon brushes.

I'd like to use a solvent that can be purchased locally and is relatively safe. Proshot Copper Solvent IV and M-Pro 7 Copper Remover are available locally. Are either one of these a better choice for copper removal?

I have read the mpro-7 is pretty good, was used for barrel break-in and worked great. Have you ever tried Shilo Creek Products bore solvent? I have some and as far as a really good clean bore this stuff works....had to use it when my Hoppes elite wouldn't get it done. Their was still copper in the barrel but it was do mostly to a barrel I hadn't broke in properly, and mostly at the end/muzzle. Any ways if you would like to try some I can ship you a bottle just pm me and we will work it out. FYI Shilo Creek Products was the first company to offer child proof lids on their gun cleaners....cool huh.

There are dozens of choices for solvents! the right solvent can only be found by you. OR at least that's what the sales person told me......the truth is I have 15 different solvents just for cleaning firearms! stupid I know but I am still looking. Good Luck

Coppeer and carbon build up in layers. You have to use a carbon cleaner then a copper cleaner and then carbon and then copper, you get the point, until the bore is clean. The best solution is to not let it build up in layers too deep. Clean more often than you are now.

I cleaned after every shot for the first ten rounds and thereafter every five rounds. With only sixty rounds since new I don't think it's a lack of cleaning. Thanks for the input.

Tm is pretty good as a general cleaning solvent . You apply and brush after a relay or two. At the end of the day Iosso and iosso oil is used by me. I check with my bore scope often to see how clean it is. I used butch bore shine also Both are very good. I won't leave ammonia base solvent in over nite.
My barrel maker warned me about ammonia it can pit the barrel
If left in too long. I also asked about the iosso. He said it's so fine i doubt it would do much harm. I clean out the iosso with solvent and plenty of clean patches to make sure it's all out.

I always thought I new when a bore was clean until i purchased a bore scope from Hawkeyee. It will really teach you on how well your technique is at cleaning a barrel. I use it every time I clean a rifle so I know what is going on inside of there. until you get one of these things you will be just guessing just like I did before I got the scope. I completly stopped using the sweets and any other Amonia based solvent. I very very seldome use a brush anymore. I use two solvents.
Boretech Eleminator and TM. It takes appx. 10 15 patches after a 66- 88 shot match and Im done. I use JB every 200 rounds or so and things have been working great.

Not so sure I agree with the Layer bit and having to use two solvents back to back to get the crud out. I just look with the scope and I KNOW if its clean and whats working.

Two main problem areas are the throat and the crown area. That is ussually where the streeks of copper are left in the groove after cleaning.

The layer bit is real. Just neglect cleaning the bore for a while.
I have seen it in layers with the scope and Just using solvents.
Best to just keep it clean. Eliminator is very good also. I just don't like that greasy feel it leaves on my hands.
I know one guy who just uses wipe out. He claims that's all he uses.
I guess the bottom line is to just keep it clean as possible.
