Patch Color

What color should a patch turn if your removing copper? Would the solvent have the same effect on a bronze jag?
I'm trying to get the copper out of a bore that was/is heavily fouled, and I don't know how to tell if it's all gone. Don't have access to a scope.
I've been through about 160 patches and 5 brushes, and I'm still getting blue. Using TM Solvent.

Mark,
It should turn bright blue. A bass jag and brush will give you a false positive.
I use BMG 50 and finish off the cleaning session with Wipe-out.

I've found that the Dewey Parker-Hale style brass wrap jag will discolor shortly after its first use with a strong ammonia based copper solvent such as .50BMG or Sweets and then stop giving false copper readings. It's happened with every one that I've used.

Of course I never use bronze brushes with these types of solvents - there's no point in doing that ;)

Mark,
I clean my bore with Breakfree CLP, a couple of wet patches and then a bronze brush wet with CLP ) the CLP has no copper solvent in it so it will not break down the bronze brush.I then push a dry patch thru the bore. Then I start with the copper solvent on a patch . Midway USA now makes nickel plated jags that don't get attacked by copper solvents. They sell a set and single caliber packs.I hope this helps you out.

Although I've never checked with a borescope, I ASSUME that when the effluent from my barrel is clear, the Wipeout/generic foaming bore cleaner has removed all the copper. Typically, the effluent is bright blue with the first applcication then clear the next time. Give the foaming cleaners a try, as long as you are not in a hurry, they are wonderful.
