Time For A New Toy

I've got a Remington 700 BDL in 6mm Remington; time for a change, new direction and a new Caliber. Just finished building a 6.5-284, now I need to figure out what caliber to transform this rifle. I'm thinking something 7mm, possibly a 284. I don't want anything Creedmore.

What's recommended for a long range shooter?

28 Nosler chambered for the 195 Bergers and don't look back. :D Good call on the Creedmoor. Just hearing or seeing it in print gives me the Madison Avenue hives.:p

Hadn't thought of the Nosler 28, great suggestion that I'll have to research. I wonder if the magazine will be large enough for the 28's?

Fanboy mea culpa. The 28 Nosler needs a standard long action with a magnum bolt face. You're looking at a short action. Sorry about that.:(

I know I'd have to change the bolt face but the 6mm comes in a long action.

I had a long action bolt opened to mag and sako extractor put in, running a boring 7mm rem Mag. I am still stuck in 1979 but for those of you who don't remember that era, maybe a new hotrod 28 is a great idea. No reason you could not rebarrel to that in a medium heavy barrela nd make a long range deer shooter. Assuming that is what you are planning and I don't think you said. I once shot a 6.5 SAUM with 140 JLKs and it astounded me...

The first question you need to answer or decide on is; do you want to shoot a caliber that cooks the throat right out of the barrel in 200-300 rounds or do you want to shoot one that arcs the bullet a little but don't burn out the barrel until you are sick of it and ready to get rid of it anyway????????? If you want fantastic ballistics and don't mind changing barrels every couple hundred rounds then go with one of the new rimless magnum smokers. Or even one of the old belted magnums...if you don't want to go thru all that then look at some of the good old standby's...7mm-08, 308, 30-06AI, 280AI, etc. Don't get me wrong...I like and have a few hot dog rifles.,...it's just a matter of if you want and accept the extras that go along with them, like recoil, expense of feeding them, barrel erosion, high dollar brass, etc.

Two-three hundred rounds is a bit dramatic; I know rifles can burn a barrel in 800-1,000 rounds but not 200-300! I can live with replacing the barrel after a thousand rounds. I don't however want something that kicks like my Weatherby 300.

A bit "dramatic"????? No, it is a fact...take a 204 Ruger out in the summer heat and fire 200 rounds thru it, in example, shooting skeet targets set up on the bank of a gravel pit. Don't crank out the rounds one right after another, work the bolt and take careful aim like you really want to hit every one. Get the barrel up to temperature and keep on shooting. You will see a scorched throat in 200 rounds. You can {and I have} done the same thing with a 243. Any of the new high performance beltless magnums will easily do it too.
Now, shoot it like you don't intend to damage the bore and you probably wont. Don't let it get hot and keep on shooting and you will have a barrel last quite a bit longer. With these high performance type cartridges 800-1000 rounds of barrel life would be fantastic, if not impossible even if you do shoot it like you got some sense.

" I don't want anything creedmore" either. Just can't make myself drink the 'creedmore kool-aid' for some reason.
Screw on a 26 inch, m-24 contour 30-06 10 twist barrel on that thing and never look back. ....

I'm starting to lean towards a 280AI. The velocity is right up there with the 7mm Mag; it would be great for long range mulies and Elk. The 280 brass is readibly available and you're not getting into the high costs with cartridges such as the 28 Nosler. There's also no issue fire forming brass as Nosler makes 280AI brass.

Ok, I have to ask.... Why are you guys against a Creedmore? Just curious. I apologize in advance if this de-rails the thread....

As for the op's original question, why not a 7SAUM?

RANT MODE ON!

PLEASE! Start another thread. Don't hijack this one. It's called internet etiquette. Cripes it's getting bad on this site's forums. START ANOTHER THREAD! It isn't that difficult and title it "Why not a Creedmoor". Yeah, and spell it correctly too.
.
rant mode off, hopefully we will now return to the OP's question.
