Spend $150-$300 to get it accurized first. If the threads do not need to be recut to fix non-concentric Remington machining that is a plus for fast pre-fit barrels from a huge number of suppliers. If it needs the threads recut it will not matter if you are not going to fit barrels yourself with pre-fits.
Nothing is a bigger waste of money on a build than an expensive trigger for a range toy. If it had a trigger like a H&R signle shot shotgun sure I could see it. If your last name is Cortina and your traveling the USA and the World to compete sure. Police, FBI, Secret Service, US Army and Navy Marine Corp. all used the box stock factory Remington trigger for decades when peoples lives where on the line. If you let them the internet experts will convince you that need an $325 to $840 trigger. That is easily the worst way to spend $325 to $840!
You need to have a well sorted stock that is for sure but last I checked the the best shooters in the world are still able to win and shoot tiny groups with wood stocks and synthetic stocks. So consider chassis negotiable but a well sorted stock as a must. Decide exactly what you want your range toy to do shop appropriatly. I would never tie myself down to one style of stock for a range toy or plinker because that almost always will stop you from being able to get a good deal. Each shooting sport has an optimized build but a range toy is not an optimized object and does not need to fit in the box for Silhoute or need to have a stock for BR work or one for prone or any other specific requirment. I am having Richards Microfit make me a stock right not that wouldnot fit intot he box for Silhouttee and would be terrible for BR and I sure as heck would not want to stalk with it but for prone is a dream!
Gunsmithing, Barrel, and Stock most important!!!
For 600m and inside the 7-08 is hard to beat especially if you do not mind running a 3 chamber brake you can tame any recoil from heavies down to about what you would get with a 243Win. Same case but you have so much more choice in bullet weight in 7mm.
A 243Win with a fast barrel twist say 7.5:1 or 7.7:1 will give fantastic choices in the most modern long heavy bullets just like the 6CM. Barrel life will not be great.
308Win would give you the best possible barrel life and is plenty flat for 600m and in.
HART, Krieger, Criterion, Douglas, Brux, LW, Lija, Shilen all make top tier barrels. Plenty of other's too but these are hard to go wrong with since they have a history of making top grade barrels and have a history of good customer support after the sale. Obviously I have not used every brand of barrel and everyone let's a few lemons out the door. The important thing is how many they let out intot he world and how them make it right when it happens!
