What else could I do...?

Some may find this funny, but on noghts like tonight I need something else to do gun related to keep me occupied. I hate sitting around the house and being lazy. I like to be productive.

I reload, I clean guns, I reload bulk handgun ammo, clean up the gun room... And I get to where I have absolutely nothing to do. All my brass is prepped ready to load before I ever go plan to shoot, Ive reloades bulk ammo until no supplies are left. Guns are cleaned, shop is cleaned... Im just a sitting duck twiddling my fingers. I got a 20 vartarg being built... But already prepped all the brass for it...

I hate to say it but I may as well be at work on my days off... Its a pit fall of working nights. Family goes to bed, Im stuck wide awake all night and dont have anything to fiddle with..

So... Question is... What other gun related hobby stuff is there to get into playing with? I cant go as far as getting a lathe and learning to chamber and fit barrels. Garage aint big enough for getting in that deep.

Basically looking to add to the hobby or find a new hobby of some sort...

I know Im nuts.
Build a bigger garage, so you expand your gun operation. You can NEVER have too many guns or shoot too small of groups.

Well, I'm late to the party but how old are you? I might suggest playing with the kids mother. If you're too old for that, I'm with Snert. Get into volunteer work. Help to make this a better world. Every day Is a gift. Nothing better than helping those that are unable to help themselves. Best thing is that you will benefit more than those you help. I like guns too, but life needs balance. Hope you can lose the boredom.

Go to the local pawn shop, buy a beat up old 22 LR. Fix it up till it can go on the thread with all the beautiful guns that is currently running. When you are done with it give it to a child or grandchild or cousin or what ever then start another one.

If you are in an area to hunt varmints, lots of critters run at night. probably best if you have a hunting pal. I always found it exciting to cut loose with a rabbit squealer and then see 3 or 4 sets of red eyes bouncing through the blackness right at you! Good Luck!

I, like mikeinct, make knives as a hobby. I’m an amateur but I truly enjoy it. I try to do everything myself if possible though I have used blanks before.

Making my own micarta scales, or resin cone scales is fun and rewarding. The leather work is too. I’ve found that friends of mine will commission a knife out of old barn wood from their family farm for me to use as scales so they can present it to their granny as a gift to recall the good old days. The options are endless.

My knives are NOTHING like JRS posted, but it’s a hobby that I do here at home that is better than therapy.

I recommend West Systems 2 part G-flex epoxy with any of the pins Mike recommended. Simple tools, a little time, and you’d have a knife you’d be more than proud of.

Just a thought. Below is a picture of some kitchen utility knives and two hunting knives in sheaths made from the barn wood from a centuries old farm here locally for a friend.

What do you use to laser ingrave your bland into the blade? what brand and type of machine?

What do yall use to cast bullets? Where do you all source the material from. I could cast bullets, thatd be easy enough. Just finding a source of cheaper to free lead that would be an issue. Then if I remember right it isnt just pure lead is it?

All my stuff is old. I just bought on lowest cost. The one thing you do want is a heated pot that has a bottom poor spout.

I have stopped using my sizer luber except for a gas check. Other wise I use the pass through and then just powder coat them.

Now with the powder coat I can use any wheel weight. For a long time now they have been zinc weights. I have never been able to get zinc bullets to work with out smearing down the barrel. I am sure someone has been able to get them to work but I have not. Today with powder coat I have been able to use zinc for bullets. Powder coat also works on pure lead.

There are still issues but they work well enough. If you are really wanting to get into it then good lead alloy or linotype is the way to go.

Hey Sniper,

Learn something new. I heard this is really therapeutic and besides you could make some neat stuff for the wife..... lol

I’m with you gentlemen ... I have to be “ doing” something.. I always have ideas of things I want for me .. house... shooting... and I like to make shit... so I’m either designing and drawing up something or building something or both.. ive has an idea for a bench that will slide into Reese hitch on truck that when setting on tail gate i can shoot off of... been having a problem with weight... a couple of weeks ago I got a steal on some aluminum from a shop a friend of mine works at.. now I’m off and running designing it out of aluminum...

So my suggestion to you would be think of what you or house could use and design and build ... gives you something to think about even when not spending time working on it..

That would be pretty damn useful. never thought about a table top to slide into a receiver hitch.

Hoping to get it completed before wood chuck season... I’m aiming to also have a couple jacks on out side corners to put down to steady truck for more serious shots...

I use a stencil, electric current, and a saltwater solution to etch it into the steel. Simple and cheap.

Ernie the knife maker does my stencils, but one could make their own I suppose.

Lots of good suggestions above , and for the most part they are reading off my list , except for the knife making , they are out of my league there.
Just to go in a different direction , start a garden, though if your spare time is at night , that might be less practical.
A garden provides healthier food, exercise with a purpose, entertainment, relaxation, sanity, less risk of dementia, boost your immune system, feed your kids(and grand kids),weight loss, prolong your life, increase hand coordination and strength, cut risk of Altzheimers by 50%,decrease risk of heart disease, increase your self esteem, save money, stop eating your share of the 5 billion pounds of pesticides placed on our industrial agriculture fields, decreased risk of cancer, improved self reliance,be a more independent human being, better eye hand coordination, learn new skills, feed your local birds, feed your local bees, feed your local rabbits, feed your local deer, feed your other neighbors, cut the trade deficit as I read that we now import more than half our food, tell a liberal that you are green and organic, save the planet, meals taste better, recycle your organic waste into the garden, increase your property value, learn personal responsibility, learn how the world really works, learn about bugs, learn about plant diseases, learn about the plants themselves, learn genetics, and ,to me ,most importantly, learn to love your fellow man ,as you will learn how much work it is to feed you.
It is a protest against the system , done in the most moral fashion. Our system is killing our family farmers. They have the highest suicide rate of any occupation as they struggle against our debt based system. I recently read that the average income for a family farm in 2017 will be negative $1,325.00. The bankers take their land and they kill themselves. The bankers set up huge industrial farms based on monocultures requiring tons of chemicals, we become dependent on their produce. You cannot be independent and free while being dependent on a grocery store!

With out getting into too much... numbers off a little on loss amount... I live and work on family farm... we are very diverse and sqeek by... 4 local family dairy farms told my a few days go they will report between $40-60 thousand loss... milk price is around $13 per hundred pounds maybe a little under ... break even price around $16.50-17... and it’s estimated to get as low as $12... one of the farms last day milking was today... cows are leaving in the morning ... very sad to see prices like this...

Sorry about the rant

I worked on a European mount today. I really kinda enjoyed it. Nasty, but it sure did turn out good so far. I gotta try to finish it in the next few days. got it cleaned up, and bleached. Its drying out good right now before I touch up stain and seal it
