Ti Muzzle brake?

Guys,
Anyone know of a side discharge Ti muzzle brake? Also, how do the aluminums brakes hold up? Building an ultralight for a customer and trying to save every oz.

The only way to save weight by using Titanium is to reduce the section thickness in order to take advantage of the strength of Titanium versus Aluminum. An Aluminum muzzle brake is by far the least expensive. Strength isn't an issue with a muzzle brake.

I am not worried about strech, more errosion from the blast. Larry, everything I have heard from those who have dont it is Ti is very tricky to machine. Not looking to tool up or buy materials for one job.

Titanium heats up just as quickly as aluminum. Erosion would be comparable with both materials.

Just have the barrel ported. No weight added then Larry

I call bull cookies on titanium eroding easily. I have several that I made and have been going on for years with no erosion. I like titanium.

I was talking about aluminum.

I would consider machining one from 7075 aluminum. It is heat treated and quite tough. I would have no qualms with using it for a brake. Machines very nice.

I talked to Pierce and they actually make Ti brakes. So I just ordered one with the action they are sending. I will make one in 7075 for myself and test it out before I put one on a customer gun.

I think 7075 will be fine. Suppressor baffles are made from it all the time and they have a lifetime warranty on em. They use ti or ss for the blast baffle but on a brake its a different animal. Itll be fine im sure

The OP presents a very interesting question, one I was thinking about myself because of weight. Does anyone know the weight ratio of TI vs 416SS? My barrel arrived yesterday after the normal 4 months. The first thing I did after checking the details was to put it on the wifes kitchen scale. Just barely made weight so I can use SS on this one but I'm sure there will be a next one.

Ti 6Al4V is about 42% lighter than 416 stainless, given the same dimensions. That would put a 4 oz. steel brake at about 2.3 oz in Ti.

Alex, I have 3 aluminum brakes I shoot now. 2 on 6-Dashers I use for hunting and steel shooting and one on a 338 Edge. Think it will take a lot of rounds to wear one out. And when they are wore out, just put another one on.

Aluminum will erode much more quickly than a steel brake. Muzzle devices (ie suppressors) that have aluminum baffles are generally only use for 22 LR or pistol cartridges. I am sure it could be engineered to be strong enough but powder blast is very erosive. I have a muzzle brake on one of my AR's and erosion is visible, even with a steel muzzle brake, albeit after something on the order of several thousand rounds.

They are replaceable though so I guess who cares?

TI does pretty good with the erosion. Look how many TI suppressors are out there. I have over 1k rounds through one of my TI suppressors. There is some erosion, but it still has a ton of life in it.
