Thrown powder Vs Weighed charges

Below is a pic of a more recent ( last month ) 600 yard target that I shot.

This was with weight sorted brass to 1.0 gr spread and trickled charges to 0.1 grains of AR comp with Berger 82's out of a Bartlein 1x7 5R 20 inch barrel ( 4200'ish rounds thru it ) AR15 Service rifle and 4x Scope shot prone from a sling.

Note the nice low velocity Standard Deviation number is,,, but not so great elevation by me.
Classic example of the skill of a position shooter not living up to all that potential that quality ammo delivers. ( velocity numbers shown are at target traveling thru the ET Microphones )

Conditions this day was hot and sunny with heavy mirage and winds from left to right going up and down from around 3 - 10 MPH fairly quickly with occasional complete quick let off or reversal.

My selected strategy for this string was to try to stay on the left side of the X ring so a pickup while I was on the gun should still keep me in the 10 ring (if I hold good elevation making best use of the fattest part of the 10 ring) and hold off from shooting in a reversal because what I saw for predominate conditions before I shot 600 was the reversals were short in duration.

I shot my 1st sighter with my no wind zero on to see what the condition was worth.
But i did feel like I broke it on the right a bit. In no wind it should have came up just out of the X ring at 3 o clock if on call.

As you can see I was watching the mirage and flags so much I didn't do a great job holding elevation.
I know I broke shot 11 high the second the Geiselle hammer fell. Same for shot 14 but i got lucky on that one...
Shots 2 and 4 were my all too common nemesis of too heavy on the trigger from time to time.

Yes a few that could have been X's were close / just out (shots 5,17 & 19),,
but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades right ??? lol

When I started BR shooting - late nineties - I was mentored by a very successful BR shooter who told me, thrown charges were fine for 100 yards but weigh for anything beyond that. I've absolutely found that to be true. You can occasionally get away with thrown charges even at 1000 but for consistency (which we all strive for) weigh it.

I have plenty of 199's but Still Chasing the 600 yard clean after all these years and enjoying every match trying.

I'm 65, and have been shooting high power rifle for 37 years. I've had 1 (one) 600 yard clean in all that time (Palma rifle, sling, and iron sights). Unless your a "hot shot" like some of our friends in southern NH, they don't come frequently. Ya gotta keep trying, you'll get it!

Well shot today in Somerset, KY Buck Creek range UBR, as I said before I weighted all charges this time and thought I might not next time just to experiment, had a little difficulty after the 3 minute warm-up, put one in the chamber and at the commence fire command the trigger wouldn't pull, when I took the bolt out I then had a bullet stuck in the lands and powder everywhere, cleaned it up and got the bullet out chambered another one and same thing, at this point I'm taking my gun off the bench and thinking I'm done, have no clue of why the trigger wouldn't fire. Thanks to John Beauchamp came over after he finished his round and offered his gun and I said no thanks and he insisted so I sat down fired 2 sighters and shot a perfect 66 (he doesn't measure his at all) !! How about that? Found between relays that something (sand or powder) was in the trigger and I used compressed air to clear it and then shot 3 straight 65 to win my first ever 100 yard match! 261 total of 264, smh at this point. At 200 yards the mirage was so bad we could barely tell the circles apart but I still managed a 61 second relay not so good at a 59 then came the screw up, I shot the #1 target twice and didn't shoot the #6 for a 47 score (mirage and wind were bad but the screw up is all on me) and finished with a 59, I'm still learning but as far as measure vs throw...........I thing I'll measure everything including the kitchen sink!!

Service rifle, Palma, and Match Rifle shooter here. Shoot my first clean after 24 years of trying this year. Was with my scoped 6.5. Had a great day with the other strings in the 3x600. Several 197’s, 198’s and a few 199’s over the past few years.

I weigh my 600-1000 yard ammo mostly. Have shot fine scores with thrown 77’s at 600 too.
