Individually weighed or thrown charges for long range?

I read that artical on the Gem Pro too.

I think its the same thing Cabellas sells or use to sell, its just got a different paint job. I've got one but it tends to wonder a bit.

I'm going to try to turn it on and leave it on to see if that helps. The artical says to let it warm up for 24 hours and I don't think I've tried that before.
I've been useing a RCBS scale.

YES! Weigh with this: http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=rc98923 It makes life much easier, and reloading a lot more fun.

I have a Lyman DPS III and it will do .1 on good days if the solar flairs are weak and I hold my left big toe off of the floor while it's running.

I have the DPS I . and I agree with everything you said .accuracy is not it's middle name . Jim

I some how posted this in another string about scales.

My VIC 123 will weigh my charges to +/- .02 (two one hundredths) of a grain. This allows my ES's to be in the teens and tighter.

Just for giggles, I ran a 1000 yd comparison. My .264" 140 VLD's running 2943 vs 2963 fps give a 3.8" vertical spread. Basically, about .95" @ 1000 yds for every 5 fps variation. By tightening up the ES, the vertical dispersion at any distance will be reduced.

I just got a GemPro 250 the other day, and so far it is VERY impressive..
Spot on every time I set a weight on it to see if it wants to change...
Sems to be the best $165.00 I've ever spent...

I'm sold! Gonna order one for me.

Glad you like it Preacher. I too was impressed by it's repeatability time after time. The more shooters like yourself that get one, should only add more credibility to my "first time" review of a product.

The CM is +/- .1g. I have a gem pro on the way and will compare it to my CM.

This would be great! Thanks Ridgeway.

OK...got my GemPro 250 and used it to weigh charges thrown on my RCBS Chargemaster Combo. Both scales were left on for a couple days. Each scale was calibrated prior to this simple test and leveled. Power supply is clean and noticed no drift on either scale. I had the RCBS since December 2010 and it has NEVER drifted. Its pretty much left on 24/7 unless the power goes out.

Please note, my CM is modified with a straw in the trickle tube and 1/3 of the opening on the tube taped off to limit amount of powder entering the tube.

I used 2 powders, R-15(33.6 gr) and 8208(25.5 gr). 10 throws on the CM for each powder. The below numbers is the weight measured on the GemPro 250.

On with the numbers:

R-15(33.6 gr)
1. 33.60
2. 33.55
3. 33.55
4. 33.55
5. 33.65
6. 33.65
7. 33.60
8. 33.60
9. 33.55
10. 33.60

8208(25.1 gr)
1. 25.10
2. 25.10
3. 25.05
4. 25.20 CM Overthrow and read 25.2
5. 25.10
6. 25.05
7. 25.15
8. 25.15
9. 25.05
10. 25.05

Looking at the numbers, the CM does a pretty darn good job of throwing charges.

okay... I'm confused. The reviews I'd seen for the GemPro 250 seemed to indicate that it read to 0.02gn, not 0.05?
It does. The manual suggests to use setting .002g for maximum accuracy. I changed it to that and wasn't aware it was reading to the nearest .05gr. I changed the setting to .001g and will read to nearest .02gr. The manual is a bit confusing at first. After reading it over several times, it makes more sense. What i wrote above might be confusing because using gram and grain.

So with that said, the test I did above it not nearly as accurate.

I would redo the test, but I packed all my reloading stuff away in order to move next weekend. Who knows when I will get stuff back in order!

So far with my limited hands on with the GemPro, I find that it is very consistent with no drift at all. One thing I don't like is the fact the wind cover is plastic. The pan is plastic too and one or the other is prone to static, which may mess with accuracy. If you are looking for a nice scale for the money, this is it. Its tiny, battery operated and comes with a nice hard plastic case. Nice range scale if you load at the range.

I was able to run a new test with the scale reading to the nearest .02gr.

R-15 with 33.6 gr charge...

1. 33.62
2. 33.54
3. 33.64
4. 33.55
5. 33.58
6. 33.62
7. 33.56
8. 33.54
9. 33.60
10. 33.60

Well RCBS CM makes the +/- .1 but I don't like the looks of it with the better scale. Time to trickle.

ridgeway thanks for the data.
For perspective, What's the average kernel of RL15 weigh?

I could only guess that the variance you're seeing is 1-2 kernels

I have one of those powder tricklers and think that if you measure powder on a beam or scale it is the best time saver and makes powder handling and dropping kernels a breeze. The owner is a nice guy and surely if you didn't like it he would make it right but there's not much chance of that it's the ultimate trickler and makes throwing accurate charges so much faster and easier.
