The 22bra Thread

1st of all, this is an AWESOME post topic....wish every cartridge had one. Question, I hear that the 22 bra doesn't need a false neck to fireform. Just recieved my dies, Wilson FL bush die ( bush .248) and have necked down 5 cases just to see how it all works....I sized slowly, watching the progress of the sizing on the neck. Stopped when there was maybe 1/64" united, or distance of neck/shoulder jct. "Should" this method work?...I don't have the barrel yet, know I should wait, and will on any further case forming. Was just curious as to if the shoulder/neck junction length dimension changes between the 22br brass and the Ackley version....Thanks for any help, rsbhunter

Ackleys are set to 2 thou of crush on the parent cartridge.

My 22 XC will shoot 75 ELDM at 3350 with a very mild load. They are not even making 6x47 brass anymore. I suggest you go to the XC
Since when? Unless it changed like this week,

Lapua is still making 6.5x47 just not currently.
Peterson manufactures both 6 and 6.5x47.
Alpha has 6.5x47.

Nothing wrong with an XC. I just don’t want to fuel the hoarding any more than necessary.

I thought ackleys were a 4 thou crush?

Welp. If the 6br is the no go and the 6bra go is 4 thou shorter than the 6br. You headspace halfway in between. That's 2 thou.

So, it's 2 thou.

If you are 4 thou short of 6br, good luck closing the bolt on a 6br case.

The internet strikes again!

Hoarding ? What does my comment have to do with hoarding? Not a thing!!!

It’s .004, always has been. I do grease my lugs regularly while fireforming.

A very small part of the brass actually touches the shoulder of the chamber. At .004 crush, it’s just a nice crisp bolt close and cases come out the exact same length and headspace.

I just did 100 for my BRA and the first 15 I measured were all within .0004 at the shoulder.

If you do two thou, probably won’t hurt a thing.

About the hoarding….. there are multiple premium choices for 47 brass. I understand you’re pushing the XC family, but there are plenty of choices for 47 brass. I just don’t want people seeing that it’s no longer made, because it is.

I was referring to Lapua 6.5 x 47L. And their website says discontinued.

If you use a headspace gauge to chamber the barrel that is for a 6bra, it is .004 short of the 6br (which is the NO GO for a 6bra). The only way you could be a -.004" short on a 6br is to have the 6bra gauge touch at bolt closure.... of maybe not even close at all. So, if you are actually using the gauges, you will be between .001 and .003". The center of the spec is .002". That is just the facts.

I tell my customers that are setting their 6bra prefits to a 6br gauge at the barrel all way down to zero. Which is the same thing. Two thou short.

I’m sticking with .004. That’s the traditional way of doing it and it’s worked quite well for me. I really couldn’t care less about pre-fits. I just clicked on the thread because it was about another BR variant.

Very neat little cartridge. I shot some of the smallest groups of my life with a 22 Dasher on a day nobody else even wanted to shoot. I’m sure this one is just as capable.

Hopefully my last question( on this subject). As I am getting a profit for a Savage large shank action, model 12 Target, how do I headspace it. Do I use a 6mm br hs gauge, or can I use the new Lapua brass necksized to the neck/shoulder jct and jam bullet? Just for the record, without this forum, and the people on it, I would never have undertaken my Dasher builds, or this one. Thanks for your time, expertise and advice..rsbhunter

6br gauge barrel down tight.

Final load for the 150 FB barrel 1/8 twist
CCI 450 Lapua brass 33.8 Gr. H4350 85.5 Berger .001 Nt. loaded rd. .252 fired rd. .253
Base to Ogive 2.640 High 1's to Low 2's for group @ 100 yds. YMMD 3120 fps
LitLBoy

LItLBoy, thanks for the Info, that is the bullet I'm planning on using. Seeing as I'm going to order a barrel and fireform, do you have a base to ogive with the 85.5 touching the lands? If you had thought you might shoot the 88gr eld-m bullets, would you have gone with the 1-7" twist ? Thanks again for the info. Can't wait til I get mine put together...rsbhunter

I am using a 249 bushing to get 1.5 thou. My loaded round is .2505". (from memory)

I'm shooting the seven twist with the same chamber. It shoots very well. I see no harm in shooting the seven.

Thanks UR, I am always leaning toward a faster twist on barrels....I figured if the base to ogive measurement was known with the 85.5 Berger, I could seat just touching the rifling, until I can get a case with 2-3 firings on it, then drill and tap for a comparator case...waiting on the 6mm br go gauge and then order a barrel .Thanks again to each and everyone who posted in the post. rsbhunter
