Testing Carbon Removing Chemicals

Frustrated..............
NOTHING I do works as well as I expect it to and running a bore brush down the tube a hundred strokes during a cleaning cycle is ruining my trigger hand. I've tried every idea, suggestion, recommendation - some work better than others but nothing does the job I'm looking for.
Yesterday I broke out my muzzle loading gear and spotted a bottle of Hoppe's #9 Plus Black Powder Cleaning Solvent:
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/815817/hoppes-9-plus-black-powder-bore-cleaning-solvent-and-patch-lubricant-8-oz-liquid
I put a couple of patches down the bore, let it rest for half an hour, did the bore brush routine and had some very good results. It ain't perfect, but it's as good or better than anything I've tried previously.
Anybody else tried it? ???

I don't know yet how well it works but I am going to try an automotive product called Seafoam.I saw a mechanic using it to clean carbon on a injection system and he told me it worked great on carbon build up.I have always used it as a gas treatmeant but nothing else.I will let you know how it works.Has anybody else tried it?

Lapua40X: I've been using JB Bore Paste (blue label) with a bronze brush for years, always verified the before and after results with my Hawkeye, and it works.

If the carbon buildup is not heavy as little as 10 strokes ( push only) will remove 80 to 90%. I never take it down to bare metal, as it will then require 5 to 10 shots before the rifle starts shooting again. I just want to keep it under control, and only use it when necessary, again, as verified with the borescope.

I love all the KG Products. I patch out with the Carbon cleaner then the Copper and finish with a couple patches of the bore polish. Then clean out the polish with Kroil patches. Patch out the chamber and one dry patch down the tube. Bore scope says the system works! I have a dedicated cleaning bench with everything set out and it only takes a half a bowl of pipe tobacco to do a bore. ::)

Warthog 1134 is about as good as it gets. I just wish I had stocked up before they were forced to stop shipping.

I can totally clean two 1000 yd. guns in 15 minutes ……… I too have to look elsewhere for bore cleaner because of Hazmat……. jim

I use Seafoam....it does a good job in what I would call an initial cleaning. Then I'll use Bore Tech C4. That seems to work the best for me.
Chevron Techron or Seafoam seem to work the same but in the end I need the Bore Tech.

Starting fluid is so flammable I would think it isn't a great idea and should be done outdoors. Me I use franks method of JB Bore paste or Iosso.

Correct, starting fluid should only be used outdoors.... otherwise you may never have to worry about cleaning again.

+1 My Hawkeye confirms the same results. I use 3 to 4 tight fitting patches about every 45 to 50 rounds following a routine cleaning with Butch's Bore Shine. I do a followup clean to ensure the JB is all out. :)

you can always try kroil. let parts soak overnight then wipe off. some of the stubborn carbon that is baked on the bolt will usually wipe right off. run a kroil soaked patch down bore and let that sit overnight. next day wipe out and work the bore over with a bore paste and patch.

I ran some non scientific tests earlier this year and found Tom Meredith's Bore Cleaning Solvent to work excellent. Where I work we have to use CLP/Break Free to clean/lube our weapons. We go through a lot of M4 barrels and they get replaced around the 12,000-16,000 round mark. Needless to say these barrels are full of carbon/copper. Before we cut up the barrels (required) I set a handfull aside to try numerous cleaning products. TM's product came out on top as verified by a bore scope. It works exceptionally well on carbon without the strong chemical odors. M-Pro Bore Gel came in 2nd.

Good shooting

I have a shelf full of chemicals. I also have a Hawkeye Borescope to inform me that I wasted my money oon the chemicals. JB on an oversize brush twisted in the chamber cures the carbon ring. I use JB in the bore somewhere around 500 rounds to keep the bore free of carbon. I use the VFG Cleaning Pellets soaked in Kroil before I apply the JB.

HEY JET? have you ever tried montana xtreme bore solvent? i'll check out toms stuff. thanks

I have and it also worked good for me but I prefer the ones listed above due to non harsh chemical/ammonia smell.

Has anyone used the Carb Out product that Wipe Out produces? If so what were your results?

I have used wipeout with the accelerator and did not see the positive results many others report. Multiple applications with soaks ranging from 30 min to overnight didnt remove carbon as well as TM Solvent. Wish it performed better for me since it's simple to use.

I really have had excellent results with tactical advantage especially with heavy carbon build up like in muzzle brakes and ar15 bolts ....it just almost melts it away.
