Testing Carbon Removing Chemicals

In my 223, I can run a few patches of kg-1 or tm solution down the bore until they come out clean. Run a brush down the bore a few strokes and the next two patches soaked with solvent will be black, then the third and so on will be clean. I can repeat this for hours and the first two patches always will be black. Why is this? I don't have this problem with any other gun, but it shoots excellent.

The brush lays down a layer of bronze in the barrel (like chalk on a black board) - the first two patches are removing that bronze.

It does it with an iosso nylon brush as well

Someone mentioned Witches Brew earlier. Barrel makers have recommended it to me and it is the fastest carbon and copper cleaner I have found. I've tried all the bore Tech cleaners and most others. Witches Brew is sold by Darrell Holland and it is actually 2000 microns of aluminum oxide in Kroil oil. Use it with patches and with a brush. Use kroil to get the residue out.. Many barrel makers use 500 microns of Aluminum oxide in Kroil oil to do the final polish on the inside of new barrels...Stroke for stroke-its the best I have found and I've tried about everything out there....

2000 microns is huge!

Yes, 2000 microns ~.08"

2000 microns ~ 5/64"

2000 microns = 2 mm

To me, that's huge.

Perhaps that should be 2000 "grit"? That would make more sense. That would make it somewhere around 8 microns, depending on which grading system you use.

Dazed and confused in VA........

IME the carbon gets harder to remove the longer it is left to stand, i.e. case mouths can be wiped clean with a dry cloth immediately after firing vs. attempting to clean necks from cases left uncleaned for several weeks requires a cloth and some type of solvent. Those case left uncleaned for months/years require a mechanical removal method such as steel wool. If you have not been routinely attacking the carbon in the throat, it is unlikely that a solvent alone will remove the carbon ring.

So after 5 pages....what is the end product that needs to used to remove carbon ?

A brush......
Carbon layer has to be mechanically removed. There isn't a cleaner solution made that will do it on there own.

My way is to wet patch out the bulk, then push a brush repeatedly, Iosso to finish up with.
Fallowed up with bore-scope inspections (there is no other way to know for sure).
Warthog 1134, Barnes CR10, and Montana Extreme are my favorite cleaner solutions.

^^^ What he said. It is a mechanical process that removes hard carbon. If you leave any in there, the next time you shoot it will fill up faster.

I use brushes and JB bore paste. I know, I know, it'll ruin my barrel, make the sun fall from the sky or some other really bad thing. On the other hand, my rifles shoot (except when I get a bad carbon ring because I tried to stretch the cleaning interval too far) and the barrels last as well as anyone else's.

YMMV
