Terrible day at the range ! UPDATE

What was the temperature difference inbetween trips? What did your wind flags tell you was going to happen (did the bullets go where the flags said they would?)

Maybe 5 - 10 degrees. AR Comp is spozed to be temp stable.

I had one wind flag out, at about 35 yards. Both there and at the bench I waited for 1 - 3 mph wind. Theres basically never 0 wind at this range, so wind is basically always the same factor in every range trip..

no powder is temp stable or fouling resistant no matter what the forums say. 10 should be ok on ar comp though

Gosh, so many details. Where does one start?! LOL...:D

I read "Terrible day at the range......stop cleaning so much" to possibly mean;

1) Somebody at the bench next to the OP kept swinging a dewey rod around & poking him??
2) Some unknown ghostly phantom force made the OP clean his rifle against his will??
3) Multiple shooters kept cleaning their rifles & causing long delays between relays??
4) The OP smells like Hoppes & the wife won't let him come home until he showers at the Y??
5) OP is new and didn't know to fire 3 or 4 fouler shots after cleaning and before target shooting?

That's the best I could figure.

1- 4 are possible. #5 is totally wrong.

For one it doesn't take me all day to fire 3 to 4 fouling rounds. Second, this gun fouls in 2 rounds.

:)

Stop cleaning so much

I agree with SPJ.

I only use BoreTech Carbon remover. It takes out my carbon and leaves ~40-70% of my copper so I have very little POI.
Carbon is what pits your barrel anyway. I little copper is your friend.
I have a 7t on my 308 and I haven't noticed the fast/aggressive twist foul any faster than a 10 or 12.
Good luck

I'm glad you explained that. LOL. I didn't understand it to be humor. And worse were some of the other guys who actually responded by giving you serious advice and input like they understood it.

Yea, that kid is cute. That look cracks me up.

Several years ago I contracted the disease where all the bullets have to go in the same hole at 100 yds.

My best 22 centerfire barrels put the first clean barrel shot in the group. At the range I clean with Butches , patch and bronze brush at 10 or 15 rounds. PatchOut when I get home. I got a few other 22 centerfires that shoot bugholes @ 100 , they get cleaned the same after 20 - 30 rounds. Borescoping and patches shows I’m keepin up with the copper and carbon.

I have a 22-250 barrel from a savage 12 that I pulled after about 1800 rounds to put an Ackley barrel on. I pretty much just ripped the barrel off and put it in the pile of used barrels under my bench over a year ago. I just picked up a savage action here for a song and dance so I looked around to see what I had for parts laying around. I saw that barrel and a bunch of other miscellaneous parts and figured while I waited for a dasher barrel to show up I'd play with the 22-250 barrel to see what life it had left.

I screwed the barrel alone into a barrel vice and looked down it. It was rough but had life to it so I grabbed the Kroil and Jb. After about a hundred passes through the barrel I patched out the sludge and peaked again. Carbon was gone but it was awfully streaky. Apparently before I pulled the barrel I abused it and didn't leave it clean at all. I used some Boretech Eliminator a few times, first patches looked okay, a bit blue so I gave it a longer soak as I kept looking for parts. Next patch after about 20 minutes came out almost dark neon blue. Looked again, most of the copper was taken out so I put it all together. The magazine is a wad of stiff cardboard with a single shot sled on top of it, and head spaced with a piece of brass from before I tore it down.

Headed to the range, trying to beat the rain, one shot to check function without the melon close by, one to check scope, and then three shot group went 0.200". Let it rest, had a NSX that couldn't zero low enough due to zero stop, so it's 6 MOA high, wanted to try again but the rain made it.

Clean barrels shoot. I don't remember that barrel doing that when I pulled it. Might try again today if the weather holds.
