Talk me out of a 308

Every time I say "That's the last .308", I end up with another. There are cartridges that "do it" better, .243 for light game, .260 for range, 7mm08 for deer and elk hunting, etc... But the .308 is just good enough for distance, good for hunting, good for accuracy, cheap, and so blessedly easy to load for it's almost a crime not to own one.

Any time a new caliber or load goes south or turns into a battle royale, a .308 is there to help me refocus and find my center again. A short session with the .308 gets me right as rain.

For North America, it's the do-all cartridge. But if I could have only one..... it'd be a 30-06, and knowing me I'd Ackley it.

I compete with the 308 out to 1000yds, great cartridge.
If going hunting for Elk and mule deer, Long action 300 win mag.
Short action one of the 7mm or 30 cal short magnums, I chose the 7 saum.

I haven't always thought this, but the years are starting to add up some. And I have had a few different calibers by now. If I was going to have a new rifle barreled, I would do something in an "AI" just to be different. Not that I think they are magical or anything. Me personally I have never owned one, YET. I think a .260 AI, 7mm-08 AI, or even a .308 AI would be cool to have. If your not going to "air it out" for Elk, what about a .338 Fed? I have no experience and don't know a thing about the .338 Fed but, that is a lot of bullet going down range. I am not a big .308 fan but, that is what I have hunted with this deer season. I usually rotate rifles every year that I hunt with. Although, I usually grab my .270 to start with. I just hunt deer and hogs in Texas. There is no Elk here but them hogs are tuff bastards. We have had more than one hog rodeo before with some big boars.

In the military we started training with the M14 , then switched to the M16 . Arriving in VN our primary was the M16 we also added a selector switch on the M14 for semi and full auto for certain situations. I liked the 14 but weight in the weapon and ammo carried was the issue. Other then that I liked the round and the weapon.

I shoot a Remington 700 308 setup for benchrest only , just a pleasure to shoot. It's my one and only , I also have a AR15 lives in the safe and a CZ 254 22lr I shoot at a indoor range . My old reliable.which my unit was called and now is my 308. . Sorry for being so long winded , the wife aynd I are came down with this China virus , takes my mind off of feeling so shitty , texting is easier then talking with the cough . Thanks guys for listening . Be Well.

Couple of thoughts

1. It’s really hard to go wrong with the versatility and accuracy of the 308
2. You can have more than one rifle/ caliber for different purposes and if your needs change
3. You probably posted on the wrong site if you’re looking for folks to talk you out of getting a rifle in any caliber

We all live and learn...hopefully...lol
For years I thought the 308 was.like the 30-30.
Had.no use for it. Then, married my 1st grade.sweetheart and her dad
said the 308 was 1 of the best for around here to deer hunt with. He traded.my wife out of her 243 for a 308. Then my youngest son won 1
and then her dad.gave my oldest boy 1. Then he traded him out of it for another 1. Then he gave that 1 to my daughter, a few years later, I stopped.by his house and he had 1 setting by the door that he gave
me. So now we all have 1 and the more I shot it...the more I seen he had a point. Fell in love with it...never too old to learn.

I just don't like 308's It works but at some point when doing a custom i just don't see it.
It's like going to a steakhouse and getting a hamburger sure it will be good but it's not the best thing available

338 Federal is an interesting idea, have to look into it a little more.
I like the idea of an ai too, have to weights the pros against easy ammo availability.

308? No reason to discourage You with that choice. Accurate, long barrel life, a plethora of bullets to choose from, feeds well and tons of load data. I’ve owned several and even though they are common in many ways I will always have one or two around. I live in Arizona and have helped a lot of people hunting elk and have taken quite a few myself, 308 is good elk medicine at moderate ranges, get past 600 and I think there are better choices but it will still get go farther if your shot selection and competence is there. I’ve let me nieces and daughters use a 6.5x47, 6.5 creedmoor, 7mm-08, 308 for elk. I find that having them practice banging steel and getting comfortable and proficient with any caliber and rifle choice trumps anything else. 308 is a great cartridge, especially if you spend the time to get to know it.

If you can only afford one rifle and want to be able to shoot elk at 600 yards with it then get the .308, I guess.

I would build a heavy-barreled 260 or CM with the old-fashioned 1:9 twist and enjoy shooting targets with 123's to 140's, then if that "someday" elk hunt out west ever materializes I'd buy a light 308 (or better yet, a bigger 30-cal) for that.

There's no way I would build a 308 hunting rifle (sporter) and then spend much time shooting targets with it.

6.5 ELD Match 130's and 140's are easy to find, and I picked up an 8 of H4350 last week. I've got plenty of primers so I'm going to thoroughly enjoy shooting the barrel out of my 260, and then getting another installed and repeating!

I have a savage 110 24" in 308. I also have a 26" 6.5 creed savage lrp. My creedmoor drops 20% less than my 308 at a grand and has 25% less wind deflection. The 7mm-08 can perform similarly ballistically to the 6.5 creedmoor. If you want to shoot at elk the 7mm-08 will be as flat and wind cheating as a 6.5 creed with match grade hunting bullets but will have more energy and better barrel life. The 7mm-08 will deliver more energy on target at all ranges than a 308 and has excelent barrel life.

I would seriously consider a 7mm-08 if you want a cartridge ballistically superior to 308, with more energy than 308, fits in a mag easier than 308, and has similar barrel life to 308. Id say it checks more boxes than any other 473 bolt face short action cartridge that you can mag feed.

reloader 16 and staball 6.5 can both drive a 150 grain bullet at 2800 fps out of a 22" barrel. Or a 160 grain at 2700 and 2750 respectively.
