Tack Driver 6

From what I can tell, any of the previous top forty, along with a few of the others, have a shot. It is unlikely to be the rookie who is courageously showing up with a 308.
Regarding the 308, today's session went pretty well. I got vertical down under a half inch at 300m and managed one group under .6". Sadly, I backed that up with a 1.7" effort, all horizontal. No mirage here. It was only 55 degrees. Not very Tack Driver like. WH

I don't think I'll shoot today. It's 40F with a stiff northeasterly breeze (gusts up to 30 mph), so not really applicable practice for Orangeburg. Load testing isn't all that valid for Orangeburg either, I wouldn't think.
Looks like part of the trip will be in winter conditions. At least I won't be pulling the trailer this trip. Weather determines the route. If it's too wintery, we head straight south to Wichita Falls, then head east from there. That's a fairly pleasant route regardless. There are various campgrounds we like to stay at along the way.
Oh, one happy note, my new scope arrived yesterday. I mounted it last night. I'll see if I shoot any better with it in place of the old 24 Leupold I've been using so far. WH

We've gone through at least a half dozen times, a month later than this year. A couple of times, it was brisk, but not Minnesota brisk! Never as bad as here, today. Now, Flagstaff, that's a whole different story. WH

Come prepared for the cold.
Several Tack Drivers ago the weather changed and we all like to froze to death.
Yeah, it was about two years ago, i woke up to a quarter inch of frost on
the car. It was long into the morning to get rid of the chill. Bring a spare
hoodie and layer up......

Current Accu-Weather's forecast for the Thursday shoot, thru Sunday, then the
drive home.....

33 degrees this morning, with a brisk north easterly breeze. I shot a bit yesterday. It was warmer (41) but windier. In other news, my new scope won't focus to 300m. Crisp and clear at about 270 with the focus at infinity. In fifty years of buying target scopes, I've never had this happen. As my dad used to say, if I had a duck, it would drown.
On the other hand, the 167 Scenar bullets seem like they will be OK. Starting out at around 2770, they aren't too bad in the wind. SD is around 9 fps and vertical is minimal. They don't shoot quite as well as the bullets I had planned on using (a thousand of which are in a postal warehouse somewhere) but close enough. The bullets won't be the limiting factor. If I'm being honest, neither will the scope. My own ineptitude overrides everything else! I'll wait until this afternoon to shoot some more. Safe to say, I'm not getting much mirage practice in. WH

The original Sightron S6 FT was intended for rimfire and parallax adjustment only went to 300 yards or so. The new ones have an infinity adjustment.

If not one of them, I’d double check my rings weren’t too tight. I know nobody’s ever are…..until stuff can’t move. Friend had a Swarovski that he couldn’t focus, he called them to send back and they immediately said your rings are too tight……and they were right.

This is a 36x SIII. It has an infinity adjustment, at least it is so marked. It just isn't an actual infinity adjustment. It will have to do. With the short focus, I might be able to read mirage better. Always look on the bright side! WH

2 weeks from today many people will start arriving to the “lady in black” in Orangeburg SC for the match of the year. We have 137 confirmed shooters as of this post and looking forward to seeing everyone in a few more days. I predict that I will know the winner of the match before anyone does is the only prediction I will make with the enormous field of fierce competitors! See you all soon!

I have been hoping for turn in our weather so I can have a cool weather tune right off the trailer. As many who have never attended this Match will find out, you don’t get a whole lot of Bench time to tune.

Jim, this will be a good time to remind everybody that you practice on the bench you are assigned. And don’t bring two trays of ammunition up there and take up an hour on the Bench when other shooters are needing bench time. Between others coming in to set flags and the time it takes during cease fires, time does go by quickly.

Cooperation among your bench partners goes a long way in insuring that every shooter gets sufficient bench time to (try) and get things right.
