One of shooters at the recent NZ Tack Driver Lite event sent me this email today. Sort of what Bart realised when he ran with his 6BRA?

While I'm hav'n a cuppa just did some quick and rough numbers.

The 6mm 65g BT Berger has a G1 BC of say 0.28 and say the PPC guys are running that at 3400fps.

The 7mm 180g Berger Hybrid has a G1 of say 0.68 and say a 284AI is running that at 2850fps.

Using the above "loads" the wind drift at 300m with a 10mph full value wind is roughly 5" for the 284 and 11" for the PPC. Clearly that's just a datum wind drift value as there's all kinds of weird stuff gonna happen at TECT park in the wind.

Say a PPC is running at a 0.2moa precision level and the 284 at 0.3moa that gives a ballpark group value at 300m of 0.66" for the PPC & 0.99" for the 284, in zero wind.

That relative precision value difference between the PPC and the 284 will very quickly fade into insignificance in proportion to how tricky the wind gets ? Especially on a tricky range.

Not only am I working to select the right 308 (better BC than the light 6mm's, better accuracy than the heavy 7mm. Seems like a winner to me), we are also working on plans for Halloween.
What's the pumpkin crop like in SC? Or do we have to bring our own? WH

Keep in mind, when shooting over flags, the advantages of BC are greatly neutralized if, and that is a big “IF”, the shooter has a high degree of ability in the reading of flags and other conditions at 300 meters.

Historically, the shooters shooting extremely accurate rifles that possess this ability are the ones who do well.

These “extremely accurate” rifles tend to be 6PPC’s and variants of the 6BR, including the 30BR as proved by Wayne France winning the Score Portion of TD2.

In short, when shooting over flags at distances out to 300 which is still within the realm of precision flag reading, put the most accurate rifle you own on the bench.

I think Jackie is absolutely right on this. This is why short range BR shooters have the edge. On the other hand, 300m is just far enough that BC can help you. The thing is, if you can't read the flags or mirage, BC won't save you. "F" class shooters have leaned toward trying to shoot a high BC bullet so they can cheat the wind. This can work at long range, but 300m might not be far enough.
By the way, I've found that my flag reading skills have deteriorated badly after years of not shooting BR. It remains to be seen whether or not I can get it back before the match. I will have a 1/4 minute 308. It may not have a quarter minute shooter behind it. WH

I have to say, the Tack Driver format is a lot like "F" class started out to be, run what you brung and do it as you like. The improvement being that you don't have to roll around on the ground! I love the concept and thanks to Jim Cline for doing it. WH

I just received a call from a Tack Driver shooter expressing interest in holding a Tack Driver style match out west. He graciously asked if I had an issue with that and will be another “Tack Driver” style event held out West mid summer he is planning on. It is great to see the interest this match has created and people are wanting and willing to duplicate its format. This match is the one that started it all and is the only one that has even tried to be duplicated. Guessing the match and its purpose of getting everyone TOGETHER has really been appreciated and that makes me proud. Another “FAMILY REUNION” of shooters!

Jim, I think this is a great Format. The key is a long enough distance to make it what Orangeburg has become.

I wish I could talk Larry Deese at Walker County into having one. He has 25 benches and a 400 yard range. It would be perfect.

But a few years back, there were reports of bullets leaving the range, so he just went rim fire.

Thanks to Jeremiah Keefe and the whole hearted approval of Jim Cline,
Anderson Creek here in Pa. is the original "Tack Driver lite". I believe we
have shot 4 so far and it does'nt disappoint. Single day match with three
group and three score targets. Limited to 50 shooters, and a very smooth
running match.
